also, can someone please confirm to me that a P reg 96 plate on this doesnt
have a cam belt, and infact is on a chain?

Confirmed. In fact I do not believe any of the 4 cylinder engines had
timing belts ever. That was the 6-es.

After 93/94 all 318i's had the M43 engine with a chain.
