Looking in the future to install a posi rear in my '67 skylark. I have
a few questions about posi in general.

- what differences do the gear ratios make
- What cars could I snag a posi rear end from.
- since I use my skylark as my daily driver (plan to race it on the
weekends)
what would work best.

any input would be helpfull.

A low # ratio (e.g. 2.73:1) will allow better fuel milage because it
takes less revolutions of the driveshaft to move at a given speed.

A high # ratio (e.g. 4.10:1) of course will be a detriment to good
fuel milage. The engine operates at higher RPMs compared to the lower
ratio unit but you get better response, torque, and accelleration.

All GM "A" Body platform from your generation will fit. Pontiac
Tempest/GTO, Oldsmobile Cutlass/442, Buick Skylark/GS, Chevy Chevelle.

You haven't given sufficient info on what you have, so the thing to do
would be to call up the companies that manufacture differential gears
with all of the information you can come up with about your
drivetrain.

My car is currently set up with a 340-2, dual staight piped, and a
st300 tranny. I am currently getting a 4bbl intake and carb for it and
plan on installing a mild performance cam (maybe poston's SB-110) and
converting to HEI. Other than that I have no major plans for my car

Install the cam when you are replacing the intake and carb or you'll
be pretty dissapointed at the gains if any. You'll have to decide how
much fuel economy you're willing to give up vs. performance gains.
3.08:1 to 3.23:1 give you the seat in the pants good feel without
sacrificing too much in fuel economy. 3.42:1 to 3.73:1 -- better pick
up but more trips through the gas station. 4.10:1 and above, don't
care what the gas costs because I'm smokin' 5.0's and Z28's on the
street.

Ron has given you some pretty solid advice. I personally like a rear end
ratio of about 3.78 to 1....A four barrel manifold with a quadajet
carb....Maybe a 10 to 1 compression ratio heads......A cam with as much
lift as possible rather than more duration.....Although more duration
gives you that cool (kool) lope in the exhaust.
Can you adapt a Turbo HydraMatic to that 340? Nice transmission for
fuel economy and snap when you need it.

I think of most Elky's as A-bodies. Not the Malibu ones though they
would probably be considered G-bodies.

I've been told by a couple people to keepp my 2-speed super turbine 300
by a couple different people. I've been told its pretty much the same
thing as a power glide, just designed for my buick.

depends on the tire size as well... a 3.31:1 with 6.70-15s feels
completely different than the same rear with say 215/70R14s (something
like swapping to 3.54 or 3.73:1)

A '67 Malibu is an A body.

That was an option or a base model of the Chevelle. I was refering to
the 78? and newer models that were not called Chevelle but had Malibu
on the name plate. I owned both a 71' and 72' Malibu Chevelle. Sorry
if I wasn't clear enough.

I thought Chevelles and Malibus were A bodies, and Montes were what
would be called A specials, like Grand Prixs, Regals, and Cutlass Supremes.
What they were called after they went FWD beats me...

I have owned a few A body cars: A '70 Monte, two '74 Montes, a '81
Century, a '80 Le Mans, and my favorite was the black '74 Monte with
the red interior, console, and swivel bucket seats...

*sigh*
