Need as much advice on this as I can
get. The car in question is a 1990 ST185 UK spec car, 139k miles, only
modifications are a Simota cone filter and a Sard R2D2 BOV.

Yesterday, notice that when cold, and revved, I'm getting exhaust
gas/smoke leaking from the engine and what sounds like a chirp/crack
sound.

Very quickly that disappears (both the noise and the smoke). I thinking
that either the manifold, the CAT, or the downpipe is cracked/split, or
a gasket somewhere in there has blown.

Smoke appears to come up from below the oil filter, but the speed with
which it goes away makes me think it is the manifold that has cracked or
the manifold/turbo gasket has blown, because while the CAT has to heat
up quickly, I can see it being warmed up that quickly to close a small
gap within 30 seconds.

Is it likely to be a blown gasket, or a cracked parts somewhere in the
mix? I don't have access to a lift, so getting underneath to see is
getting to be a problem.

I'm wondering if it is worth getting a standard manifold again if it has
cracked, or spending the extra on a equal length tubular manifold. Are
any of the tubular headers a direct swap regarding position of the
turbo/oil lines etc, or am I looking at extra pipe work.

Even if it is just the manifold to turbo gasket or head to manifold
gone, I guess that means complete disassembly of the CAT/Turbo and
possibly even the removal of the manifold so I might as well think about
a DeCAT/Downpipe while it is all off and save later expense.

If I don't get this sorted ASAP am I looking at any further damage (I
don't know how long it has been like this and I've only owned the car
for a couple of months). The car is my daily driver.
Sorry to ask so many questions in one hit.

Any UK members care to comment on how much any of this (parts and
labour)
is likely to cost me depending on what I need doing (worst case
scenario) and if you have any recommendations for mechanics in the North
west of england that understand Toyota Turbo engines. I know I could
replace the rest if the exhaust system with a Nur Spec R, Mongoose, or
Aussie system while it is in, but I don't know if cash will flow quite
that far just yet.

exhaust leaks are easy to find, pop the hood and listen. when you think

you found it by ear move your hand near it and if you feel a pulse of
air that's where it's at. Common exhaust leakage places are the exhaust
manifold gasket which could be caused by loose exhaust manifold bolts.
The downpipe on my old 85 truck had a leak where it mated up with the
exhaust manifold once. Also, I had a exhaust manifold bolt completely
fall out!

Cheers fella.

I've got a feeling I've got a lot of stripping down to do, just to see
where the manifold is on this.

The 3S-GTE in the Celica is covered by the Intercooler and the turbo
heatshield.

I can see the can coming out of the turbo (although that has it's own
shield), and the intake to the turbo, but the turbo itse;f, and the EX
manifold is covered by a nice plate from the top.

Will maube give it a go next weekend when I get some light.

Almost all ST185's get a leak from the head/manifold interface from time to
time - the nuts come loose on the studs.

Mine has also, in my 7 months ownership, leaked from the turbo to downpipe
interface and the downpipe to cat interface. All were repaired when I
replaced the turbo, removed the CAT and replaced my cracked manifold.

Where in the NW are you? I'm near Wigan, also a UK'91 widebody ST185,
running an ST205 turbo, no cat, K&N intake, 1bar boost, later model head and
steel HG. And main bearing rattle.
