temp +38 - what gives? |
|
|
e34, 1989, 530i se auto. driving along, happy as larry, when off went the
bong and on came the message 'temp +38 F'. temp needle is fine (sitting
nicely at mid-point that you very much), coolant level also fine and appear
to be nothing bad happening under the bonnet. car seems to drive the same as
ever. could it have anything to do with the weather? it has been
particularly cold, today - my other car, a toyota, tells me when it's very
cold and thus, that it could be icy outside. i'm hoping that's it what is in
this case. only had the thing a few months so still learning about it.

That's exactly what the problem is. Nothing to be alarmed about. |

It's the outside temp. They peg it at 38 degrees because with sufficient
wind chill ice may form on the road surface. Or maybe they peg it at 38
degrees because their thermometers are as inaccurate as the speedometers,
hence they build in a fudge factor :^) |

I believe that's a negative number when it happens... -32 perhaps? Anyway
it's not +38F, that is indeed the indicated frost point that sets off the
"bonger".
The obvious test is if the reading is changing with the outside temp, if the
sensor is broken it will never change.

That is the outside air temp, not the engine temp. It works similarly to
your Toyota.

Somewhere in the manual (OK, I'm a geek for reading it...) I remember
seeing that "roads can be icy even when ambient temperatures are as
high as 38 deg. F or something like that. So the info display is
warning you about this potential condition. Mostly a problem on
bridges and such.
I can tell you that it has to be a bit colder than that for ice to be
on the roads here in New Mexico...
