squeeling belt |
|
|
I recently replaced my alternator in my toyota 4runner, '88 with v6 engine. i
wasn't able to get the belt really snug. It started to squeel occassionally
when it was cold. so i had my wife help me tighten the belt as much as
possible. But it still squeels just a bit sometimes.
Any hints of tricks to either tighten it better, or some other way to keep it
from slipping? I know the proper solution is to replace the belt. But the
belt is only about 3 years old. And more importantly, in order to replace the
belt, I have to remove the power steering belt, and another belt (i'm not sure
where that one goes near the bottom of the enging), so this looks to be a
multi-hour task i'd rather avoid.
thanks,
paul

Check the diameter of the pulley on the alternator. It is possible the one
on there is too small.
Is the belt aftermarket? Sometimes they are just a shade too big for the
application. Find a slightly smaller belt or go to the dealer.

Check the alignment of the drive wheels, WBMA.

Try a pry bar on the alternator while tightening the mounting bolts. Don't
over tighten because you can eventually ruin the bearings on the alternator.
You should be able to push down about 1/2 to 3/4 inch in the middle of the
belt when it is adjusted properly.

My ninety four Caravan squealed, I thought it was the belt, but it
turned out to be the belt tensioner pulley, idler I think they called it.

Once they start slipping the friction surface gets hot and crazed. Best to
replace --- you could try sanding the v part with sand paper to remove the
crazing.
