The biggest concern I have for them is the ones that are ducted to pull air
from below the engine, close to the ground. I've seen more than one car (not
just Audis) in wet weather suck in some water. In a few cases, it was enough
to lock up the engine. One guy was lucky enough that his car just stalled
without bending anything.

As a matter of fact I went and looked at the K & N site and they warn |
you not to use them in wet weather. The filter has the tendancy to
transfer moisture into the engine with all the usual bad results. So
I'll pass on this one for now. Too bad there isn't a hood scoop mod
to go with it. What was that jap car that had that wild offset hood
scoop?

Argh - I wonder how that happened. My newsreader expires newsgroup
postings 14 days after they are received, so it would seem that
something had caused that post to be delivered to me on 3 November.

Talking about Kumho, I bought a set of 4 KUMHO from tire rack and
balanced it three times, twice from one place then once from Pep boys,
the vibration just never went away. Ended up a having a little
argument with the tire rack team, as they would not accept those back.
Anyhow after several phone calls they took them back. But I did lose
the shipping money and installation money.
NO MORE TIRE RACK
Now I am running Good year Wing Force, very nice, smooth and
resposive. Although its a all season tire cant really comment on the
winter performance YET. They are OK priced too, I got them from Mr
tires for 300 balanced and installed. |

Hmmm did the tire rack recommend the Kumhos to you?
They did take them back so that is a good thing. <g>
I know someone that bought some Kumhos and installed them on their Jetta and
they are wearing out (almost bald) in less than 2 years of driving at maybe 10K
miles per year. :-(
Sometimes if you buy cheap you get cheap. I am cheap but I at least like to
try a good value. lol
I thought about the Kumhos for my Jeep Grand Wagoneer, but after seeing that
set wear out so fast I will leave them alone unless I sell the Jeep quickly
after new tires. <g>
I would probably say go up a little in price to Yokohamas. I installed a set
of 4 on my 83 A4KS about 5-6 years ago and had the tire rack install and
balance. No vibration and no trouble yet after maybe 30K miles.
Not the stickiest tires after they wear down some but I am still able to travel
at higher speeds without fear.

dave

It was the air mass flow meter - (I think that is what they said), |

If these were high perf. summer tires like Kumho 712 or Kumho MX, then 20K
miles of life is actually not bad, especially if they weren't rotated
frequently or were driven hard. 20-25K is about average for this type of
tires. If one is looking for treadlife rather than performance, one should
look towards grand-touring all-season tire category.
But I agree with - generally you get what you pay for, except for Michelin
maybe - you pay, but you don't get... all that much. :-)

Grem,
You wouldn't have a K&N air filter installed by any chance, would you?

Not working completely, or not working properly (I have similar problem
on different model)?

Sounds like a dirty throttle body. Try cleaning it with throttle body
cleaner. Probably a lot of gunk in there.

APR engineer told me just to upgrade the air filter to K&N. It
doesn't make a differennce with the cold air intakes in the B5 A4. I
was looking at getting a APR chip and asked him about it and he told
me not to waste my money. To upgrade my exhaust. |

Filters are standard parts no K&N AFAIK.
Symptoms are still there, the air mass flow fix has certainly improved the
performance, but there is still some hunting for idle when cold but slight
improvement when hot.
The garage inform me that there are no other faults being shown on
diagnostics.
The symptoms are a damped oscilation until the throttle finds its correct
position.
My uninformed guess is that it could be a feedback a sensor problem.
Someone mentioned a sticky throttle body, I wonder if it could be
mechanical.
Thanks for all your replies.

At 65,000 miles, that was what was happening on my 99 S420. The engine and |
drive train were bulletproof, but the heater/air conditioning had to be
replaced, the hydraulic vacuums for the doors had to be replaced, and the
trunk had stopped functioning again, the S.R.S. light had come on and the
quote was $140 to diagnose, and repairs possibly in the thousands.
All stuff that could be fixed, but if you have to pay a mechanic (as I do)
then it is thousands of dollars. I turned mine into an Audi S8 with an
extended warrranty, and got a much faster, much better handling, more
comfortable, better appointed car (2002 model). Quite happy with the
changeover.
We then got a Lexus RX330 for my wife, and she couldn't be happier.
Intellichoice, Consumer Reports, and so on, give Lexus very high marks for
reliability. Much better than modern Mercedes.
I don't think I'll be back to a Mercedes. We'll see how the Audi holds up.
Since it is an S8, which was the top of their line in 2002 it might do
better than other Audis, which have about the same reputation as modern
Mercedes, except that Audi seems to be on its way "up" and Mercedes seems to
be on its way "down" the reliability scales.
Lexus remains very solid. |
