Hobby vehicle lift question |

Hello,
Has anyone used a vehicle stacker with a 10 foot ceiling before? I
would like to purchase one of these things and only have a 10 ft ceiling in
my shop. I have one collector vehicle (corvette) and wish to buy a Mustang
Mach 1 or similar car in the future....any thoughts from a person that has
one would be great...Thanks...Jim

It really comes down to the combined height of
the two cars plus the height of the lift platform.
All the lifts I've seen say they can be used in
9' clearance areas. If you put the Mustang on top, you
might not be able to fully raise the lift, but you should
certainly have enough clearance for the Vette below.

picture of how clumsy they are. We sometimes don't think about the garage
door or overhead lighting or the loss of working floor space. These things
also have safety pawls that engage in the columns when extended and parking
the lift unlatched would worry me if you were planning on leaving a car at
lets say eight feet instead of nine.

forgot about....... I do, however have room to scoot it ahead of where the
garage door would be when fully up. Now I am also thinking of recessed
lighting over the area also. (This shop is in the construction stage)

I would agree if that were so, but...
I believe all these lifts have intermediate safety pawl
engagement points at intervals
between the lowest point and the highest to allow for storing
or otherwise working on a vehicle at lower than the full
height point.
I'd check with the manufacturer of any lift being considered
to be sure before purchasing.

My friend just installed a lift in his garage. He arched the roof - no attic
so that the peak was 12 ft in the middle of the garage. He also had his
garage door follow the roof peak when open rather than open in to the horiz
position. Recessed lighting also.
There are many saftey pawls between the fully up and completely lowered
position and his lift is not clumsy whatsoever. I'm just waiting to find an
excuse to use it....
The lift uprights are at a slight angle to the car rather than being 90 deg.
The rear lift arms are longer than the front - this allows you to open the
doors while on the lift without hitting the lift uprights.
His is also a 240 Vac electric that powers the hydraulics. and is only two
uprights as opposed to the 4 poster.
I'll try to take some pictures.

Mine is a two post also and has safety catches about every three or four
inches. It is electric/hydraulic and was purchased from AutoLifters in
Kansas. Nice lift.

I have two of these lifts....(my original BackYard Buddy and a Gemni.
which I purchased maybe 5 years ago.....)
Ten foot ceilings is cutting it pretty close...just measure the height
of each car (and add 2 inches) to each car.. then add about 5 inches
for the height of the lifts ramp.... if you come up with a number
under 120 your in business as is..no modifications...
Someone mentioned that garage doors normally open up and take up space
inside the garage.....he is correct...you can not open a normal door
in a lot of garages IF you have a car UP on the lift...since the door
will hit the car.... Easily solved however....I use roll up garage
doors similar to those doors on loading docks ..roll up like a
Venetian blind... Not very expensive, available in many colors yada
yada... or you can modify the tracks of your exsisting door
....normally not a problem.. OD if you have a deep garage you got it
made..just place the lift towards the back of the garage...
The ONE THING I WILL TELL YOU IS :
look for the posts to be 4 sided...
( like my backyard buddy) ...my Gemni has posts that are 3 sided..with
the sliding mechanism fitting into the 4th side.... BUY the 4 sided
kind...with the sliding mechanism, that rides OUTSIDE of all 4 sides
of each post...
Both of mine work just fine...but if I got drunk and ran my garden
tractor into my backyard buddy when it had a car up on it I honestly
would have to be doing 50 mph to collapse the lift....If I did that to
the Gemini with 3 sides..depending on the angle I ran into it I
"think" I could collapse the lift doing maybe 5 mph....
I know I am not going to run into the lift with my garden tractor BUT
the 4 sided posts are just so much more "solid".. I still have
absolutely no problems or second thoughts about walking under either
of them to do an oil change or to work on the cars.. I have told many
people to spend the money and go for a lift with 4 sides.. (many
brands ..not just BYB make them....
Original poster mentioned he wanted a storage rack... OK FINE...
BUT I do not discount using them for maintance.. I at one time owned
a 2 post lift and to be honest 85 percent of repairs etc that require
a lift can me easily done with a 4 post lift...5 percent may require
you to stretch a little more if you use a 4 post lift etc.. and 10
percent just either can not be done or is a royal pain in the ass to
do using a 4 post lift.. (like rotating tires, or doing brake
work...royal pain on a 4 poster..requires jacking up the car sometimes
while it is on the lift...
I solved that by buying a low level scissors lift that only lifts
the car (all 4 wheels) maybe 40 inches off the ground.. disadvantage
is that I can not drive on that lift..I have to get down on my old
bad, aching knees and adjust the lift arms to the car then find a way
to stand back up (back also is shot) and raise the car...
If you got any specific questions feel free to e0mail me privately and
I'll do my best to answer your questions... BUT to be honest I think
owning a 4 post lift would be well worth the money ONLY if I used it
to prepare a car for a show etc...real nice cleaning the wheels on a 4
post lift..just sit on a chair and raise the wheel up to a comfortable
height and use the ramp to hold your beer ...real handy... LOL
