It started with the tail lights. About 5 seconds after shutting off the engine the tail lights (not brake lights) would come on and stay on and run the battery dead. We replaced the tail light relay and headlight relay. It did not fix the problem, it got worse. While working on it trying to figure out what the problem was, sometimes the reverse lights would come on and stay on. When messing with it, it seems that there is a correlation with taking the key out of the ignition, but I can't say for sure because the problem is intermittent. Since it doesn't do it everytime, I have been trying to drive the vehicle, and have had more problems. One time the right rear turn signal stayed on with the tail lights, another time just the right rear turn signal. Also occasionally the light in the dash that tells you when an exterior light it out will come on, but then it goes out. Another time I was driving and turned on the headlights and for about 2 seconds all the light on the dash went out.
We don't know what to check. The only thing we can think of is maybe it is the anti-theft feature since it seems to have a correlation. Our anti-theft feature has never worked since we bought the vehicle used a few years ago. The light in the dash flashes anti-theft, but it doesn't work. We would like to try disabling the feature internally, (fuse, relay) but our book doesn't say how. Any suggestions?
