Hi, I'm having trouble deciding between 2 cars to buy.

I'm either going to purchase a new 2005 Hyundai Elantra GLS
hatchback for $14,200 OR a new 2006 Toyota Corolla CE 4-door
sedan for $15,100 (or $15,500 depending upon the option package).

These are solid, final prices I have negotiated with both
dealers over the phone.

People say the Toyotas are built better than the Hyundais
and most other vehicles for that matter, but the Elantra comes
with a 10-year 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. The Corolla
comes with 5 years of powertrain.

Which would you choose? I plan to keep the car forever,
so trade-in value or the speed of the car's depreciation is
not a factor in the decision-making.

Thanks a million for any advice.

For those of us old enuff to remember, Toyota, Datsun(Nissan), Honda

were poorly built crap cans when they first came to North America.
But look at them now. They are amoung the best built cars on the road
with strong power trains although the bodies will rust away with a
still well runing engine. Hyundai was the same way - crap that has
turned to gold. They are very well built Korean cars and just like
the Japanese, they really pulled up their socks. Unlike the
'domestic' cars where management decides to spend a nickel instead of
a dime, Asians spend the dime.

For my money, both cars are in the same class, but I would go with the
Elantra. It uses a mitsu power train, has good fit and finish, has
the little extras that others don't, and is under valued. $900
difference is a lot of gas money.

The Elantra is still a year older model. That has to be worth
something. If you are planning on keeping it a long long time, maybe
that long warranty looks good, but sometimes big warranties are a way
of buying customers and the warranties become well used.
