I just got a 2004 Toyota Corolla regular edition. I plan to drive
this car in Canada and I was wondering whether it is advisable to fit
snow tires on this car.

The car is a slightly used car and I noticed that it surges slightly
while idling. Could this be a problem with the thermostat or
something?

Thanks.

My father has a 2004 Corolla CE, and I guess he had no complaints with the

stock Goodyear Integrity's last winter. However, he always drives slowly
in such conditions and does not even go out when it's really bad.

Depending on how much driving you must do in these conditions, I would
still suggest getting winter tires.

That's the work of an idle compensation device. Perfectly normal.

Thanks.

No problem.

Anywhere that you expect snow it's advisable, in Canada in the
winter it's advisable.

The surging could be caused by the cyclic loading and unloading
of an airconditioner...to check just shut it off and see if the
surging stops.

4 season tires are adequate in snow and on ice when NEW but if they have
been used for 2-3 seasons, put winters on.

We had a Camry which was used on Nova Scotia's icy winter roads.

The car had Michelin all season tires and traction was adequate.

I decided to improve things by putting Michelin Alpins on the front.
The Alpins improved front end traction markedly; however, a problem
developed. We could now drive much faster when going straight. But
when a corner was negotiated, the back end would lose grip and the car
would somtimes spin out sideways. In other words, the car was being
driven at speeds compatible with the capability of the front tires,
but the all season rear tires did not perform as well.

So, Alpins were placed on the rear as well and the problem was solved.
In fact, the gain in stability on snow and ice with four snow tires
was noticeable.

All this to say, based on a sample of one, it is advisable to put snow
tires all around on a front wheel drive car.

Hi, Gordon,

Guess what? It was the AC. The car doesn’t seem to surge anymore
when the AC is off. Thanks,

Lillian.

Hi, Gary,

I’ll definitely fit tires all round.

Thanks.

Lillian.

Ok, good... that's quite normal, most cars with AC do that while
it's running. It's just the compressor loading the engine down a
little and the automatic controls overcompensating a little.

Hi Lilian,

Once I switched to Aplins I left them on year round. The downside of
doing this is that snow tires supposedly wear faster; however, they
lasted well.

My reasoning is that, if you plan to keep the car for a while, you'll
be buying another set of tires anyway. So why not buy the snow tires
now? In the long run, they're free.

Modern snow tires are much better than all seasons. You need to put
them on all 4 wheels.

Buy a set of cheap steel rims for the winter, to save the cost and
wear of changing the tires twice a year. $120 USD.

The only downside is that you need to spend the $ a bit sooner, and
you need a place to store 4 tires.
