1989 Corolla - Flushing sound heard while driving |
|
|
I'm sure this is coolant. It sounds like its coming from behind (in front
of) the glove compartment. It gets louder as I drive, occurring
intermittently between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear.
Question: What is the best way to add coolant to the vehicle to be sure
there is enough in the system?
I've topped off the radiator, but when the car was cold. The thermostat is
closed at this time, I believe. So do I run the car, let the thermostat
open and then add more coolant?
While running or not?
TIA

While the engine is cold, open the cap on the radiator and top off. Also |
add coolant to the overflow reservoir to the "cold" level. Start the
engine, set the heater temperature to full hot. As the engine warms up and
the thermostat opens, watch the coolant level in the overflow reservoir, and
as it drops, keep adding so that it reaches the "hot" level.
Another source of water sloshing sounds from the glove compartment area is a
clogged drain for the air conditioner evaporator. This is less common in
cold weather when the AC isn't used much. If the carpet is wet under the
glove compartment, that is the likely cause. Look under the passenger side
for a drain hose and poke a stiff wire through the hose. I don't recommend
trying to look up the hose while you're trying this unless you're prepared
to get showered with stale water.

No AC. However, thank you for the information.

yes while running add coolant, run until cooling fans kick on, preferably
on a hot day. put a funnel into the radiator fill so it will be full but
wont spill over as it warms up. |

LOL. A hot day. Okay. :) That'll be in about 10 months for me.
