BMW 525I 2001- BRAKES CHANGES AND SENSOR EFFICIENCY |
|
|
Folks,
I have a 525i, 2001 with 49k on it. I had to get front brakes (pads
and rotors) changed last year (37K). The rear brake sesnor wearing
indicator light has still not come up but I can feel the delay when I
brake. I have about 50% highway miles and 50% city.
I was wondering if you guys have had any expereince withthe sensor
efficiency. I know there are only two sensor instead of four and was
wondering what your expereince had been?

There is no difference between front and rear sensors - they both operate
the same circuit. They work by shorting out to the steel of the disc -
they are attached to the pad and of the same thickness as the minimum of
the pad - so when that wears to a minimum it wears through the sensor and
completes the circuit.
Of course with only one per four pads, it may not be the first to reach
minimum in practice - this has just happened to me. But the horrid
graunching noises of steel to steel leaves you in no doubt that something
nasty has occurred. ;-)
I don't think braking efficiency gets worse as pads wear. Although heat
conduction between disc and fluid may as the pad gets thinner.

I don't wait for the sensor to trip and instead check the pads for |
thickness periodically. When the pads have worn down to a bit over 3/16"
or so I'll replace them, or even sooner if there's a track day in the near
future.
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "I can feel the delay when I
brake". Regardless of the amount of pad wear there should not be any delay
between pedal pressure and brake application. If there is you probably
have something else wrong that needs to be checked soonest.
The brake wear sensor is an all or nothing thing. When the pad has worn to
the point that the sensor contacts the rotor and wears through the light
will come on and stay on until the pads and sensor have been replaced.

The instructions said to use Windows 98 or better, so I installed RedHat.

Yes - the old one often breaks when you remove it anyway. Think the
plastic becomes brittle due to the heat.

Hello
I have now some experience with the brake indicators
The indicator light come up some time's.
Reason for check the system . The pads where not worn out but the time for
replacing was coming. So I placed new ones.
Result > some time when cornering > nuisance alarms from the brake
indicator.
Advise from my garage: change the sensors at the same time when the change
the pads
After replacing the sensors ( front and rear) the trouble was over.
(watch it > the cable length differs between front and rear)
The connection of the indicator can collect dirt and get corroded. (Also the
pickup coil)
