I am going to attempt to change my distributor cap and rotor. I know if
I don’t do this correctly the car will not start. Any tips to ensure it
does start and thing(s) I should look out for?

The car is a;

BMW 318i 1984
4 cylinders
1.8 liter engine
Coupe

Lex, thanks

The rotor only goes on one way, look at it closely before removing the old
one and put the new one on the same way. It should just pull off, push on.
Distrib cap, just pull one wire off the old cap and put it on the new cap,
continue clockwise or counter clock until all four have been transferred ..
start with new cap in same position as old cap, there should be some way to
align them identically, a notch or tab or something of that sort. Push
wires in snugly and make sure any boots are seated tighly as well. Check
for cracked rubber on the boots and wires, replace if you find much.
