BMW C1 Scooter |

I know this is an auto group, so I apologize in advance. I saw a BMW c1
scooter in a catalog. Does anyone know anything about it ? Is it available in
the US ? If not, would it be legal to import one ?

See them all over Europe, but don't think they are legal here. Vespa has
just re-entered the USA market within the last couple of years, but I assume
that there are gov't regulations covering scooters and bikes similar to
those that keep the best of the world's cars out of the USA. Then again,
the USA has never been a big market for scooters, so it may just not be cost
effective to import, stock spares, and market the little buggers here.
It would probably be the DOT and EPA that set standards. Might be worth a
look at what sort of rules govern the import of scooters. Maybe a self
import would be doo-able.
I think that the BMW scooter, at least the sort of covered (hardtop) model
that caught my attention was fairly pricey. With the US$ at an all time
low - now might not be the time to go shopping for one.

BMW discontinued the production of the C1 scooter some months ago and sold
the name to citroen.
The C1 is claimed to be extremely safe for a motorscooter. It features
front crash and rollover protection. The driver is seated in a bucket seat
and wears one 2 point and one 3 point safety belt. The C1 is the only
motorbike which officially may be driven without wearing a helmet in
germany. BMW has sold two versions, one with 200 cc 4 stroke 1 cylinder
engine, the other with 125 cc engine. The 125 cc version is interesting for
holders of a german car driving license issued before April 1st, 1980,
because they do not need a motorbike license for it. Besides this you may
drive a limited version at the age of 16 (other european countries have
similar laws).
A C1 scooter features electric starter, disc brakes, a CVT automatic
gearbox and a special stator, which you can engage and disengage from the
seat. ABS is optional. The 125 cc version has 15 hp and reaches a max.
speed of approx. 70 mph. When it was sold in Germany, it cost some 12.000
DEM, which is about twice as much as an ordinary 125 cc motorscooter.
BMW marketed the C1 as a kind of single track car, which features better
safety and weather protection than ordinary motorscooters. IMHO it combines
both the disadvantages of a car and a scooter;-)
