Swap 54 flathead Pontiac for GM inline 6? |
|
|
I have a friend who has a 54 Cdn Pontiac with the flathead inline 6 that is
very tired and needs a complete rebuild. Anyone know if a modern GM inline
6 will bolt up to the tranny?

Eugene...
Auto or stick?
Lots of adapters for a stick. But why not do the whole enchilada? Get a
engine and transmission combo and slap it in. Engine swapping was my
specialty sometime ago. 52 Olds in my 41 Ford, GMC 6 into a 39 Chevy (
easy swap, reverse the radiator in its mounts) 59 Pontiac into 55 T-Bird
etc. The biggest problems are the tranny mount and the engine mounts and
even those can be bought...The easiest would be a small block Chev.
There are books out (had one gave it away) on how to put a small block
into anything and everything. Even a VW bug.....
Dang, I'd love to do just one more swap.
In that book I had, they put a small block into a 54 Chev...Same dang
thing as a 54
Pontiac.
If you want, post here and I'll to some research on that swap book.

I've already put a 400 cid sbc into a 54 Cdn Pontiac (same as American
Chevy). Wrote up about it on my website at:
http://www.cadvision.com/blanchas/54pontiac
My friend has a sick flathead 6 in his stock 54 Cdn Pontiac which has the
torque tube rear end. We're looking at alternatives to rebuilding the 6 and
how difficult/cheap it would be to swap out the flathead for a straight six
while keeping the original 3 speed manual tranny.
So far we've got it down to changing the bell housing as the 3 spd tranny is
the same as the one used on Chevys. Got to do some measurements to verify.

Do you know the details of installing a small block chevy engine
in a VW Bug?! I might be interested in that! I always thought it would
be real expensive, you'd almost have to build a subframe under the hood!

I saw that done once. A complete tubular chassis was built with the
wheelbase and track width of a VW bug.
A small block Chevy and TH350 along with what looked like a narrowed 10 bolt
GM rear end was installed in the chassis and then mounts and so on were
attached for the very stock looking VW body. It was a Super Beetle which
had the slightly longer front hood and still the engine was about under the
dash. The biggest give away from the outside was some grille work punched
into the front of the nose lid to let air into the radiator. Sure looked
like a ton of fab work to me but it was different and most likely pretty
quick too.

The soft cover book I had on sbc's into other cars was published by
peterson or Petersen publishing co..(hotrod mag?)
The two small cars were a VW and a Fiero.....Wish I could remember
more.
I do remember who I gave it to. Should I look it up?

I remember one of the Hot Rod magazines in the 80s had an article where a
guy stuffed a V12 Jag engine into a VW bus and was blowing away vettes at
the lights. Talk about surprised vette owners! Don't remember too much
details.
Here's a site that manufacturers kits to install various engines including
V8s into VWs:

Terry M. from River Falls, I called the kid that I gave the engine swap
magizine to.
He said he would drop it off at my place.
If you would like to have it, I could send it to you.....No cost to
you......Unless you fell guilty about postage, in which case you could
fire a couple more bucks into the Sunday Church plate....
You will have to come up with a good address for me to send it
to....You can send your address to ::::
Dan
Box 26321
Milw WI 53226-0321
Or post it here, which I would not do..
Or go back in these posts and you will find a good address under
