How to clean a fuel tank |
|
|
Hi group,
I'm currently trying to get my '73 Triumph TR 6 on the road. Last
weekend, I discovered, that the fuel lines were all clogged with
brownish-black muck (the car has been sitting in a back yard for a
couple of years). I cleaned them only to find out, that the inside of
the fuel tank is covered with the same muddy dirt.
Can anyone give me some suggestions how to clean the inside of the fuel
tank?
Thanks a lot,
Joerg

Take the tank off the car. Now take all the in and out stuff of. Pick
up, sending unit, fill tube and grommet. Now drain it good getting
everything you can out. now fill a bucket with the hottest water you can
get in it with about 1/2 a bottle of Mr Clean, dish soap or mix of both.
Rinse it around in tank getting it everywhere sloshing back and forth.
when you are satisfied it is fairly clean drain. repeat if necessary!
Now power wash it if you don't have one go to the car wash (at night may
cause less stress for the owner!!) Rinse it real good with lots of
clean water later. Now get all the water out. blow out with air till
dry. a 1/2 gallon of pure alcohol could be sloshed around to absorb any
water residues but I have never needed it.
re install and be happy. always put a little bit of gas stabilizer in a
car that's not driven much and always lots over the storage periods!!
Dodgem
you could take it to a Radiator shop for steam cleaning. I've done that
to but to weld something to it after!

Easiest and safest route is to drain it, drop it, remove all
fittings/senders/etc. and take it to a radiator shop to have it boiled out.
Alternate route is to flush it with a garden hose for about 10 mins., then a
strong detergent, really hot water, and about a cupful of 1-2mm ball
bearings. Slosh this mix around in all directions to loosen the gunk,
drain, flush, drain, flush, repeat until it drains clear water. Blow it out
with compressed air, and let it bake in the sun for a day before
reinstalling.

Put an inline filter before the fuel pump after its all "cleaned" especially
if you clean it yourself. This will save your fuel pump in case there are
any little pieces stuck in the fuel lines or the tank.

Good comments, for cleaning, especially the one about using alcohol
afterwards. A couple comments, Eastwood makes a cleaning solvent specially
for this, I would also use a couple of feet of dog chain and then seal it
up. kick it around the yard a few times (the tank, not the dog) then a real
good fresh water flush and then the alcohol then use a tank sealer. Allow a
week for it to set up good before you put fuel in it.(I know what the
directions say, but trust me, it'll still feel tacky after a couple days.
Or you could save the aggravation and buy a repo'd one while they are still
available.(assuming they are)
Been there done that... Wondered why I didn't buy a new one when I was
finished, saved about $75 all said and done.
