Heater Fan - Celica |
|
|
Have a 1990 Celica ST. The heater (blower) fan only works in the HIGH
position. It does operate the fan on low or medium. Is it likely to be the
relay (passenger side firewall) or the dash switch itself? Or something
else? All the fuses are OK
I took the cover off the relay and seems to have no burnt contacts. Any
thoughts?
Thanks in advance

Surely you mean it "does NOT" work on low or medium.
It's the blower resistor. Pull the glove box to find it in the heater vent
plenum.

You have to remove the fan itself from under the pass. side of the dash.
You should see a 'resistor farm', or what looks like small springs
soldered onto a piece of circuit board material. It may look good, but
it's bad. Last time I checked, it was $38.00 from Toyota, or $10 from a
junkyard. Test it first if you buy it used. If you find the same model, or
one with a similar fan assy, the whole fan is usually $30 from a junkyard,
or about $100 from Toyota.

The black piece attached to the firewall with 2 screws, 4-plug connector,
and has a ceramic block attached in back with what looks like a set of
contact points that are open (Lost it's soldered connection) ???
Think I found it..
Thanks again

HAHAHA! Not a problem! Glad to be of assistance. But, the joke's on me!
I had a similar problem with an '85 Celica GTS. No fan at all. I bought a
'91 truck for the engine and stripped it. Just replace the fan, right?
Wrong. The reisitor pack is in the switch itself. The fan wouldn't fit. I
plugged it in and ahd all speeds! So...
Turns out the motor brushes were non-existant! New brushes, four and a
half hours, and a half ripped out dash later, I again have heat and
defrosting!
