chrome plating? |

anyone got any good recommends for a chrome plating service? I have
some very rare pieces in poor condition that simply have to be repaired
and replated. (if you really must know they're the quarter beltline
pieces for a '64 Stude convertible, of which there were only a couple
hundred made. I have been told that the last set that changed hands
went for over $600. OUCH!) Anyway, I've been told that Qual Krom is
good but am open to suggestions. Who would you send pieces to that are
irreplaceable and simply have to look good, as well as weather well
(these are on the outside of the car, of course.)

Chrome-rite in Fayetteville, NC does very good work and they are very
reasonable. Expect to wait about 6 weeks depending on how extensive
the repairs might be.

Finishing Touch on Northwest Highway in Chicago. I saw them repair a 57
Chrysler 300 grill that was half gone. Looked better than when the factory
manufactured it back in 57 when they were finished.

I heard the outfit in Fayetteville was high, you might also look at Tricty
Plating in Tenn. http://www.tricityplating.com/
I've used them for a bumper and chrome headliner trim for a '68 F-100,
excellent work.

I second the Finishing Touch recommendation.
A friend finally found the time to do a full resto on his
dreamcar, a '57 Roadmaster convertible.
He spent quite a lot of $$ at FT but the work was
fantastic. There was a local reupholster place that repo'ed
the leather seats perfectly.
He did his own body/engine work. The thing was a jewel.
Then some dude from Norway made him an offer he couldn't refuse.
Watch out for how nice to make your dreamcar, you may have to sell it!

I am a second generation restoration mechanic in NY. My father was the
president of the local antique car club, and rebuilt way to many
antique cars.
He used Browns Platters, I believe they are in PA.
They do excellent work. I can get their phone # and address if you are
still looking for someone to do this for you.
I'm in the process of building a custom 4x4 for myself. an
international scout rolling chassis (12 volt), with a 57 Lloyd minicar
body (6 volt).

Thanks Doug, I have called a couple places and as expected none of them
are even willing to hazard a guess as to estimate without seeing the
parts, and none of them are close enough that I can stop by and see
their operation either. I'm in MD so depending on where they are in PA
this might be a good option for me (Qual Krom is in Erie, which is about
5 hours away from me.) You can email me direct (see .sig) if you want
to keep it off group. I also know a guy in the Stude club in Georgia,
but I'm not sure he would be able to do the repair work that needs to be
done on these pieces.

I have a friend whos second job is buffing parts for a small but busy plater.
He says most of the parts he works on are Harley parts.
You may want to check with a bike shop near you and see where they get their
plating done. Chances are it is someone local |

I had a good experience with qual-krom. But when i sent them a pitted
pot-metal piece they said they couldn't guarantee the results. I had
good results with Paul's chrome. Good luck. |

I had both bumpers rechromed last year on my 68 Toronado here in AZ --
