loose steering linkage? |
|
|
on my '88 4runner, after I rotated my tires, I feel a slight vibration between
45 to 50 mph. I assumed it to be an out-of-balance front tire, especially
since it coinciced with the tire rotation. But today i raised the front end
to check things out, and I noted that the connection between the right tie rod
end and the relay rod seems to be loose, there is a measurable amount of play.
Is this normal, is there supposed to be some looseness, or should it be a firm
connection?
I had the idler arm replaced a couple years ago, and also one of the tie rod
ends but i can't recall which one, i'll need to check the records. so i'm
surprised that the tie rod connection is now loose, assuming they checked all
of them a couple years back? But i also have a power steering leak that soaks
that particular connection, can this degrade the joint?
thanks,
Paul

If there was no vibration until after the tires were rotated then I would
say it is the tire. It may not be a balance problem either. You also need to
check for a bent wheel, out of round tire or broken belts in the tread.

Generally there should be no measurable play in any front end parts. If
the tie rod end has play in it replace it.

A "couple of years" is a long time, more than enough for a tie rod end to
get loose.

No. That may actually help the joint by keeping it lubed.
