PALMYRA, Ill. - A deer smashes into a car and thrashes its way into the
front seat where it fires up both the radio and wipers. It may sound like a
tall tale some guy cooked up to explain to his wife the smashed up car
parked out front, but it is also absolutely true. Just ask Jim Trump.

The 58-year-old high school teacher was driving home from a card game Nov.
10 when he saw a group of deer standing in the roadway near Palmyra, roughly
30 miles southwest of Springfield.

"I couldn't go any direction to get away, so I just locked my arms down, hit
the brakes and went straight ahead," said Trump, a physical education
teacher and coach at Greenfield High School.

Trump's Ford Escort was going about 55 mph on Illinois 111 when it struck
the ten-point buck, he said Wednesday afternoon. The huge deer hit the car's
front windshield and rolled onto its roof before crashing through a rear
window.

"It started thrashing around and headed toward the front seat," Trump said.

That's when he skidded to a stop and jumped out, leaving the keys in the
ignition.

"It had a real nice rack on it," Trump said. "When I slammed the door, it
turned its head around and the antlers knocked out the side window."

The deer, which authorities said weighed about 280 pounds, forced its way
into the front seat, causing heavy damage to the car's interior, Trump said.

"It turned the windshield wipers on and had the radio going," Trump said.

Three police officers were needed to pull the animal out of the car. It had
at least one broken leg and was later killed.

"I've been a police officer since I was 17 years old, with military
experience and everything, and it was the first time I've seen a deer in the
vehicle," said Macoupin County sheriff's deputy Paul Bouldin.

These types of accidents are most common between mid-October and
mid-December, during the deer mating season. Illinois State Police said they
often occur on roadways near wooded areas and fields.

The Illinois Department of Transportation said there were 25,660 vehicle
accidents involving deer in 2003, up from 23,647 reported in 2002.

Trump said his insurance company deemed the car totaled.

"I really hated to lose that car," he said. "I was getting 35
miles-per-gallon."

I heard a similar story but in this instance the deer kicked the
driver in the head and he died.

Several years ago near my house South of Houston, TX, at about noon, a dear

came thru a guy's windshield. The driver veered off the road and hit a
tree. Both driver and deer were killed.

that happened to an old teacher of mine.

I'm not sure if the deer kicked him in the head though, I think it did as he
died a few days later.

Speaking of Fords...has anyone seen this car/deer accident posted on the
Internet? It's really nasty so I would not open if you're easily
nauseated...

That's not at all uncommon in Illinois. In 1990, my Dad's 77 Corolla was
charged by a buck on Illinois Route 1 near Watseka. A few months ago, my
Previa got hit in the side by a buck on Central Road in Hoffman Estates.

These pictures are not of the same incident, or the report is a gross
embellishment!

This this came through the front windshield and splattered itself all
over the interior. Bits likely came OUT the side window and parts
probably hit the wiper and radio controls, but there was no thrashing
about by a large, live animal in that car.

Look at the parts smeared across the inside of the rear window! That is
from the body being accelerated when it was hit at the joint between the
windshield and the roof, and inside bits of the deer remaining
stationary until the rear window struck them.

No, actually I got hit when a deer crossed from the south to the north over
east of SBC in the preserve. Why the side? Must have been crazy.

There's not much green area between the south side of Central and I-90 -

maybe it was watching the cars go by?

Must be something about Previas that deer like. A former co-worker's wife
was driving their Previa in Indiana and deer ran into the sliding door,
putting its rack through the glass. She got the van stopped about the same
time the deer freed itself from the door and ran away. Her 2 boys were
covered with glass but unhurt.

Actually it was toward the east end where there is a tiny bit of woods. I
suspect it was the whine of our supercharger that drove it crazy. Had it
been coming from the north I would have got it in the sliding door, too.

At least nobody in your van was hurt! I used to drive that road on Sundays

to take the kids to their soccer games at the forest preserve. We'd see
deer fairly often at the edge of the field, maybe they were soccer fans!
