This just started happening. 2004 325xi oil light yellow when ignition turns off. It has about 10K.
Computer says about 5K until service. Is this anything to be concerned about?

RTFM.

Damn right it's something to be concerned about. Your oil is 1/2
quart/liter low.
Go to the damn store/dealer and buy a quart and add some before your engine
freezes (actually, it won't until it gets several quarts low, and the xi
starts with 8 quarts
rather than the 7 that others start with.)

Bit strange that it doesn't glow when the ignition is turned on, just when
it is turned off :-/
I'll get some oil.. although I didn't figure a 6 month old car would be
burning oil!
I don't get why an xi would have more oil??
I guess I'll read my manual closer.

It's so that you don't get all flustered and figure a) it's a low oil
pressure
situation (which uses the same lamp IIRC), and b) so that the reminder
is close to the top of your brain when you get out of the car.

I've said it before (in another thread), I'll say it again: ALL CARS USE
OIL. But with 3000 mile oil changes, you don't notice because you
re-fill it before it gets low.

The xi has a different (bigger) oil pan since the half-shaft goes
through it.

Many will burn more oil when new than when fully run in. Although this
isn't as marked as once, as bores etc are machined to a higher standard.

With synthetic oil, the engine won't sludge even if it is run to 24,000
miles before a change.

Depending on the pattern of driving one does, frequent short trips in a
cold climate, this is perhaps not so with conventional oil which is
likely what most mechanics, who are also business people who make a quid
or a buck by doing oil changes, are basing that opinion on.

Factory engineers designed the engine and wrote the manual. If it says
follow the maintenance computer; then follow the maintenance computer.

Without fail, they say that they see engines at around 75K miles that
have had 15K synthetic oil changes as specced by BMW with failures
due to sludge buildup.

I've not heard of any failures due to this. Basically, I don't believe it.

I can't agree because a reputable brand such as BMW woudn't expose its
credibility and its image by wong assessments.
Engines were built to withstand what they were specified for.
Qualifications were done considering worst cases and extreme conditions a
car should encounter during its lifespan, well beyond the usual use standard
people make of it.

Of course some of us push the engines close to or even beyond their qual
boundary resulting in fatique. Others are thinking to save money staying
below 2000 RPM. This probably save gas and money but probably not the
engine. It is made for revving (reasonably, of course). There's no reason
not to use it as intended. Maintenance is foreseen in accordance. Pay
attention to the engine (love it !! ) and trust what BMW says !

OTOH, most "said" mechanics would better stay at home with their citroens
instead of talking about outstanding and reliable engines they don't know
anything about. Everybody may play the expert preaching for prudence. This
is very well accepted by the average people as jurisprudence.

Look for who takes advantage of intensive oil service and you'll understand
a lot of things.
