I know someone in Canada that's selling one probably cheapish.
Might need a body and some electronics work. But if you're looking
for a small 4X4 with the fuel economy of a large 4x4 that's the unit
to get ! |

After reading your post I would actually recommend moving your desired
year up to 93-94 Same body style and most of the problems were cured by
then.

The 93-94s had the 4.3 with multiport in them. It has two main faults.
The EGR valve likes to get stuck open when chunks of carbon get in it.
(not hard to buy a gasket that has a screen on it to stop this problem)
and second they have the central fuel injection that like to leak when
they get old. That is about a 300.00 part but once replaced they usually
go another 100K.
Define Cheap? I bought one for my wife 10 years ago for about 6000.00
that was in great shape. Currently they run about 2500 for one in good
shape.

well i just found one even cheaper then that. but when i test drove it
everything seemed fine except the brakes have air in them and there is a
leak in the trani line. but everything underneath looks pretty solid only
some body rust oh yeah i didnt get to see under the hood because the hood
release cable is broken and the emergency brake cable is froze how much do
you think a hood release and emergency cable system would cost? now this
will probably sound stupid but this central fuel injection(better with
carbs)i think that fuel injection means there is allways fuel in the carb
right???? b/c i know (from stupid experience)that by pumping the gas
before starting it you will flood it so im quessing that is were this 300
dollar part comes in?? stupid question? thanks again. |

You can get a recent generation one from a dealership for about $10K, I
think theres a 2000 S-10 Blazer 4 door with like 36,000 on the lot for
$11000. |

The hood release cable is about 15.00 and they are not hard to install.
You can open the hood by removing the grill and using a screwdriver to
pull the latch open. The brake cable depends on what you want to do.
Since it is rusted in place I would just replace all of them, that would
be about 50.00 for the parts with the front cable being the pain to
change.
The CPI unit is a fuel regulator and single injector that feeds the
cylinders through plastic tubes and poppet valves. Nothing like a carb.
Pumping the pedal makes no difference, no accelerator pump. Unless the
engine doesn't fire there is no way to flood it.
Common body rust on the S trucks - Bottom of the doors (poor drainage
just like most other GM doors), front inner fender braces ( dust, dirt
buildup from not being washed out, in salt states it is REAL bad) , rear
quarter panels (from the tires sandblasting the area directly behind the
tire), Rear tailgate (again poor drainage) Most parts are available in
patch panel form OR complete replacements.
Check the front suspension and wheel hubs close, as well as the steering
system. Check the oil filter/cooler lines over close as well. They are
prone to leak if they haven't been replaced with updated parts yet. That
would run about 120.00 if it has the cooler about 75 if only a filter.
Some seepage is just about normal but if you wipe the hoses off and
drive it around some there shouldn't be obvious leakage.
Most of these are the same for any used vehicle but they are some of the
more onerous areas on the S series where people report problems.

Mom has a '94, and it's so-so... The steering is very sloppy. The left
turn signal won't cancel. Muffler needed replaced. Runs rough and rich -
fuel injectors need replaced. Bottom of doors were starting to get rust,
but grinded them out and painted it before it was bad. Replaced belt
"Butterfly" needed cleaned. Breaks were replaced. Defrosters weren't
working - needed better contact. Back latch wouldn't unlatch with the
remote - needed greased. By the way 127k. It also hates to go in reverse
when it's cold, and it's a little sluggish going when it's cold too. No
matter what you get, you're probably going to have to put a few $100 into it
if you get a used vehicle. If you have to put much more than $500 or so
right off the bat though, consider something else unless you can get the
price dropped.
