catalytic converter |
|
|
We took our 2000 Infiniti to the local shop because the engine service
light was on.
They replaced the rusted exhaust system, but said that might not
totally fix everything and that it could still be the catalytic
converter. I guess to soften the blow of the exhaust system bill, the
mechanic said that the catalytic converter should be covered under
warranty.
He went on to say that the federal government says the catalytic
converter should last at least 10 years and be replaced free of charge
if it goes bad during those 10 years.
If someone has information on this either at the DOT, EPA, or another
source, please let me know.
TIA for any tips, suggestions, links, or comments that could help me
out here.

If you go to the epa website (www.epa.gov), you can do a search on
catalytic converters and get a bunch of info. I did a search on
replacement converters and found this entry in their FAQ:
(9) What should customers know about buying converters for their cars?
First and most importantly, the original converter on a car or truck
was designed to last the
life of the vehicle if it is properly used and maintained, and is
warranted by the vehicle manufacturer
to last for at least 5 years or 50,000 miles (8 years or 80,000 miles
on 1995 and newer cars and
trucks), whichever comes first. See the vehicle warranty booklet for
more information. |

Call Nissan corporate and mention the federal emissions warranty. It
covers all emissions related items and is separate from the manufacturer
warranty.

Thanks gentlemen. I'm checking the links as we speak.
If I find anything new, I'll post it for all to see.

Got to the dealer this morning and they said there was a catalytic
converter that was convered by the federal mandate warranty on the
emission system, but that there was a second "catalytic converter" that
wasn't.
Turns out it was neither "converter". The dealer updated the EMC
(engine ? Control) software, to a later version. The engine light
went out, and the car is running a lot better now.
I am ordering a replacement warranty booklet from Nissan so I have a
better idea what's covered in the future.
My thanks for the timely replies and guidance.
