I hope someone here will be able to give me a quick diagnosis.

This is a 97 Sentra.

If the headlights are on, the left brake light doesn't work. The tail
lights, right brake, center brake, and turn signal lights all work all
of the time, and if the headlights are off everything works.

Suggestions?

Probably is a bad ground.. It's not the head lights that are causing the
problem. When you have the tail light on and then apply the brake, the
ground connection is too weak to operate both the brake and tail light.
Check to see if the bulb socket is corroded. Sometimes the easy solution is
to add an extra ground to the light that is causing the problem if the
socket is clean..
