The M6 0-60 debacle probably has BMW spitting nails.

So don't tease for those of us who are still waiting for download to
finish. What's the debacle of which you speak all about?

Presumably he's referring to the fact that there are so many settings for
the engine, transmission, and traction control, that getting the best 0-60
figure involves a fair bit of button pushing before the car has even turned
a
wheel.
It certainly did appear to be an overly complicated management system.

Frinstance, the engine can deliver 501 hp, but the engine has to be
programmed for that setting, otherwise it only delivers 400 hp.
Mike.

Why can't they have some engine management presets, nothing complex,
just economy/fast/track.
Having to fiddle with the traction control, shocks and then battle
with the iDrive to tell the engine to give full welly is insane!

It's not complicated, but it can be time consuming and shouldn't be done
while driving. It took the show's driver ~3 minutes to set all of the
performace settings.

The M5 has a dashboard "M" button that appears to do the same thing.

Forget Top Gear anyway, they're not that good!

Watch 5th gear this week and see either Tiff, VBH or Jason take the M6 round
the track, then you'll get a "proper" review.

Aston was nice though ;-)

All these journo's are like a dog with a bone over the i-drive system. Too
complicated for their tiny minds, and they can't be arsed to read the manual
so they've already decided it's crap. So why are most other manufacturers
starting to over some very (very, very, very) similar set-ups on their new
models? BMW ahead of their time again? There are so many options it might
take a bit of time to get the interface just right, but it's definitely the
way forward.

As for the 0-60 thing, the M button has to be programmed once (i.e. when you
buy the thing), and then, just like on the M5, pressing the M button gives
you the full potential of the car.

I like Top Gear, but like all motoring reviewers, they can be just too lazy
at times. They couldn't even get the BHP correct for pity's sake!(It's
507bhp).

Don't know why I typed "over" instead of "offer", but there you go!

And at the end of the day who is going to use all the variations available
on a regular basis. Chances are that once the novelty wears off, most owners
won't bother.
Mine has just 3 settings for the auto box. Snow, sport, and economy. Most of
my driving is done using the economy mode. I rarely use sport, and have
never used the snow setting.

On my E34, the winter mode totally inhibited auto gearchanges. I used to
use it quite frequently in stop start slow traffic to lock the car in
second gear.

3rd gear actually, if I'm not mistaken.

Only if left in auto.
