Recommend automatic transmission repair shops |
|
|
Our 99 Nissan Sentra seems to have a problem with the automatic
transmission. The car is not moving either in forward or backward even
after changing the gear and giving the gas. Also when the gear is in
"P" mode, engine is making some noise. Also observed that the
transmission fluid is leaking from the bottom of the engine.
If anybody faced the similar problem, request you to share it. Also can
anyone recommend the reliable transmission repair shops in HW 6, I 10,
Westhimer Rd, Dairy Ashford Rd areas.
We are new to this kind of problem and so really worried. I would
appreciate any reply on this.
Thanks,
Venkata

You'll be MUCH better off with a used trans rather than most trans shops
rebuilds. Most use cheap, low quality aftermarket parts and work on
"everything" so have no way of being good at any one make of trans.

Curious...
Where do I get "used" and be sure it is working better than my "used" one ?
Do you know anybody who sells used transmissions with a guarantee ?
I have 1994 sentra with manual transmission and the common "5th gear issue",
I was thinking about replacing mine with a used one, but how can I tell
if I am not buying another transmission with a 5th gear issue ??

Auto trans failures on those cars isn't a common failure point so the
chances of finding a bad one isn't likely. A lot less likely than getting a
bad reman one is.
I've been a pro mechanic for almost 30 years and seen LOTS of rebuilt
automatics in imports fail in a year to 2 years of being rebuilt and the
shops almost ALWAYS weasle out of their warranty and either want 1/2 or
more of the original price or else just offer nothing blaming the customer
for the failure. I stopped rebuilding automatics years ago because no one
was willing to pay what rebuilding them right (using factory repair parts)
costs. The aftermarket repair parts just don't hold up and I'm not going to
stand behind something like that. I'd MUCH rather install a used one and we
have had very little problems with them.

Most give a warranty of 90 days to a year and will actually honor them. Also
it will be 1/2 or less of the cost of a reman. If you don't feel
comfortable with a used one, the only other option I'd recomend is a
factory reman'd unit but if it's even avalible, isn't going to be cheap.

If the car has a known weak point in the gearbox, might not be a good model
to look for a used one. And having a manual gearbox repaired isn't what was
being discussed, automatic transmission problems were. Also I'd NEVER let a
generic transmission shop rebuild an import manual transmission.
BTW it looks like they have a kit targeting this specific "5th gear popout"
problem and a good nissan mechanic should be able to repair this manual
trans for you without going crazy replacing everything inside it.

Looks like the shift hub assembly and 5th main gear are the culprit.

Nice, but if they have to pay over $300 for parts alone,
what kind of total cost of repair I could be looking for ?
For 1994 sentra it looks like it will be more than the car is worth.
But thanks for pointing out the store - good to know it exists :-) |

Some people would say a tank of gas might total it out? You aren't going to
get ANY type of repair be it a used trans or a "patched" one for less than
$1000. If you can't afford this, just don't use 5th gear.

It is not a matter of affording or not - it is question - is it worth it or not.
Let me tell you this way: I got this 1994 car in 2001 and payed $1500.
How much is it worth now ? Probably $500. Putting $1000 into 11-years
old car will NOT increase its value to $1500 so it is not worth the repair.
So yes, I am driving without 5th gear now and this is how this car will
end its humble life :) |

It's not "worth it" unless you consider what you could buy with the money it
would cost to fix it. What kinda car can you get for $1000?

I plan to spend about 12-15 tousand for next car and I will be missing
this $1000 I would spent for a car on his way to a junkyard... |

There is another option.
When I was stationed in Germany, a friend of mine had a Pinto and the
automatic transmission went out. He signed up for a transmission class,
and rebuilt his transmission for his class project. The instructor
provided the special tools and instruction, and the military provided
the shop space. I think he spent about $300.00 on the class, plus parts.
I know this will be unlikely to help you, but just showing that there
may be more options than you consider :) Good luck.

Actually, this is very interesting option... I like to learn new stuff
and fixing my two aging cars become a recent hobby of mine :-)
I will look around for such classes! Thanks... :-))) |
