Ok, so I got up this morning, got into the car, and my girlfriend
the other side, went to shut the door, and boom, nothing, didn't
latch...
Now it was about 14F outside, but no idea if this would have
affected the latching. How often do the door latches break? It's a
1992 325i (E36)

Any help appreciated, I hope I don't have to sit in the cold and
replace a door latch now...agh

There is a plastic cap that sometimes gets lost. They are cheap and readily
available. I don't know if your model uses that system but that's what's on
my 1988 E28 535i. It's on the latch very visible and just pushes on. Check
a good door and compare to the broken one.
