Well, I might be selling a piece of property I own, and will have a few
bucks. It isn't worth much but is in a prime location but has been
rendered unbuildable by all the zoning.

So, I will have enough to either pay the taxes on the house for the next
25 years, or buy a car and get rid of a lot of my 'collection'.

Or, should I FIX the collection for about 1/3 of the cost of a new car?

In the running:

Matrix, preferably AWD or, perhaps, an XRs
Scion tC, although I could use the functionality of a wagon
Subaru Impreza Sport, AWD and a wagon, but the prices of Subies have gone
through the roof!

Or, a Mazda 3, probably a 3-door hatch. Everything I used to like about my
older Toys, and at a decent price, too. And they are all built in Japan, a
BIG consideration for me! The Subies are 50/50, the tC is Japanese, and
the Matrix is Canadian only.

Or, i could save a few bucks, get a Vibe, and
replace the Delcos when they blow out in 3-5 years...

If you keep the land, it's value will increase over time. Why not you invest
the $$$ in something that will make you a profit over time. Mutual fund,
maybe. Or another piece of land.

Since you asked, and if reliability and longevity is your main
priority, I'd say sell your 3 cars and go with the Matrix/Vibe (exactly
the same except for the logo) or the Scion. Reliability and mileage
should be a little better than the Mazda and quite a bit better than
the Subaru. OTOH, I test-drove a Mazda 3 and it was a ton of fun to
drive! So if that's a priority, definitely look in to one of those.
I would not recommend an AWD Matrix/Vibe - I know people who own them
and don't like them, and everything I've read says they're just heavy
and sluggish compared to the 2wd. If you're worried about snow, get
good snow tires instead, for whatever you end up with.
If you'd consider a used car, I did quite a bit of looking in the
northeast US, and it seems like there are more used Vibes available
than Matrixes (Matrices?). I found an '03 Vibe base model with 26K
miles (still under factory warranty) for $11K, which isn't a whole lot
more than you'd spend fixing your other cars.
Hope this helps,
Andy

I had 2 Subaru's in 95. The first was an Impreza and it was so buzzy I
traded it for a Legacy wagon after a few months. The ac on the legacy was
inadequate and the AT was variable in that you never knew if you would get
up and go when you hit the gas or not. Great suspension and handling but
engine was a bit inadequate. I guess it was the extra weight of the 4 wheel
drive. Latter Subaru's have headgasket problems which may or may not have
been resolved depending on who you talk to. Interior fabric and door panels
were garbage. But it did not rattle. One door panel had to be replaced
under warranty because a hole wore in it probably from dirt in the plastic
mold. Another panel was on its way out when I traded the car. Depreciation
on Subarus used to be quite bad. Even though windows had no frames they
sealed extremely well. The car was a strange mix of extremely nice
engineering/manufacturing and crap.

It's useless. All the laws that have passed since I have inherited it
(when I was *eight*!) have rendered it useless. I am pretty lucky to be
getting what I am for it, since I am selling it ti the next door neighbor.
It'll probably increase the value of his property by about $100,000.

It is 25 feet too short in any direction.
It is right on a major river.
Since it doesn't HAVE a boat dock, I don't think I can build one.
It is considered wetlands.
There is not (now, according to zoning and health) enough room for a well
and a septic system, under current regulations.
Any changes have to be approved by the Endangered Species Coalition (THANK
YOU LIBERALS!!!!!! Even though I have owned it for 40 years, I MIGHT KILL
A NEWT!!!!)
The EPA and MADEP have to approve anything.

I could jump through 50 hoops only to get to 51 and get stopped. What's
going to kill me is "Title 5", the EPA and that dammed 'Coalition". I MAY
be able to ram it through, but I have been underemployed for so long that
I just can't afford it and can use the cash.

I am not sure about the car though. You are correct; a car is NOT an
investment (especially if you flip your rare Volvo on it's roof!), but,
the next car I buy will last me a long time, since I am keeping two of the
others. So, I will have the new one for the main car, the Van for the band
stuff and winter, and my Supra for the summer.

Now, I COULD take some of the money, do the $1500 in repairs to the LHS,
the $3000 to the Supra, and the $4000 to the hachiroku and get 3-5 more
years out of each, but I'd rather sell the LHS, get a car to replace that
and perhaps sell the hachiroku (*sniff*). If I were to get a Scion or a
Matrix, I bet it would last me 15 years easy, and still look great after I
oil it and garage it.

I even discussed this with my Mom, who is SICK of all my cars, and even
SHE said get a new car! That's odd for her!

Holy Crap! This sounds just like an answer *I* would give somebody! Almost
word for word!

I worked for a Toyota dealer this summer, but I didn't notice the
sluggishness you describe. And, we had a couple of Mazda 3's on the lot; I
drove both of them and they ARE a blast! I, too, am not sure of the
reliability; but, like anything else, I see Mazdas that have been around
for years, and others that bit the dust rapidly.

The Toyotas certainly hold their value, are good cars and are ultra
reliable. But they are not very exciting. The only one I would REALLY like
to have is the Solara and is out of my range right now. Getting a loan is
not what I want to do, since it defeats the purpose of owning a car
outright. If I am going to be paying interest, I'll put the money in the
bank and at least get paid something myself.

Toyotas have gotten stoic over the last few years and all drive the same.
My last two Corollas were a blast, as were some of my older ones, like a
Corona MKII.

The Vibe may be a viable alternative.

One problem with the Mazda3 is that its gas mileage sucks for this class.
It gets mileage that's comparable to a Camry.

Mazda reputation is pretty bad. Look at edmunds. The new RX7 has a ton of
problems with the rotary engine. I have never seen a Mazda work longer than
5 years trouble free, and this includes the 929 that I owned in Japan - it
was nothing but crap. Subaru is a nice car, especially the STI, but that
liberal stigma when buying one is worse than buying a volvo.

Totally forgot about Honda, didn't I?

I can get a Civic coupe right in my range.

For about $2500 more, I can get a 4 cyl Accord Coupe.

I got 20 mpg overall with my LHS. I can't tell you average economy for my
Avalon because the piece of garbage is designed to zero out every time you
turn off the car. What morons.

I was doing 25, but it has slipped to 22.9.

Getting really close to selling it. Will probably get a Honda minivan.
Waiting for the spouses ok. We drove the Ford, Chrysler, Honda and Toyota
minivan. Honda and Toyota were most impressive but I would hate to give
Toyota any more of my money. Chrysler was overpriced so they could give you
a big rebate.
