Hi

I have a 328i Coupe with a gougling grinding/grating worn bearing sound
coming from the what I believe to be the water pump, lower left hand side of
the block near the belts.

I've heard that if this plastic impeller goes then it can ruin the engine.
Any ideas that if this symptom is a failing water pump whether it needs
immediate action or it can last for a couple of weeks until I can get it
into a garage ?

Temp gauge is rock solid

Thanks

JM

Your best to get it repaired immediately, it most likely is your
impeller, however if it completely gives up the ghost you will not be
able to drive. The bmw alum blocks are very suceptable to heat and
heads are VERY expensive.

No question. Immediate action. Don't drive the car at all until you
fix this or you may cause expensive damage to the engine.

Ignore that. Change the water pump at the very least. I would change
it even if it was not making noise just because it has not been changed
and is therfore likely to be one of the plastic impellers.

I have a 1994 325i and had the plastic impeller break without warning
a few weeks ago. Temp guage shot up immediately. Fortunately, I was
only a few blocks from work so I parked it and had it towed to the
garage. The aluminum head on a straight six is easily warped if it
gets too hot which would necessitate a new head gasket and who knows
what else. I'd get it fixed pronto.

Just a couple of months before I had the top radiator hose neck break
(also plastic) and had to get a new radiator. I should have had the
water pump changed at that time but didn't think of it. Silly me!

Anything that sound lower on the block than the fan is not the water pump,
it could be one of the tensioner pulleys. Plastic impellers were used
through the end of production of 96 models. 97 and later have metal
impellers, up until 99 production, now back to plastic.
