echo hatchback |

Hi I am looking at the 2005 Echo Hatchback. I really would appreciate
if anyone has, or had an echo in the last few years, a bit of info on
if you had any problems with it or if you found it a good car.
Thank you very much.

Unless you're in Canada or Europe, I don't think you can get a hatch model
(Can you?) Anyway, Mine's a 2000, (now paid for, hallelujah!), and here's my
usual blurb:
I've had mine for 5 (A 2000 I bought in '99) years and love it, but
of course it's a matter of tastes.
I love the way it handles, it's nimble, and when I 'tell' it to do
something, it does so immediately. It gets 38 city and about 40 highway,
despite the automatic transmission. When I bought it, we lived in New
Hampshire, and it handled in all that snow and ice marvelously. My only
complaint is,
at that time, the paint jobs on Echoes SUCKED. I plan to get mine detailed
in the next year or so.
I also hate people thinking it's a Ford F*ck-us!
:-)

Since the Hatch is not sold in USA and it's called Yaris in EU, I'd
think you're talking about the Canadian model.
I'm affraid you won't find many long time users since that model started
with the 2004 model-year only.
I own a 2005 2 doors for about a mounth. I'm very happy so far! Except
for one 400 km trip, I'm still on my first tank of gas!
To this day, if I had to pinpoint a single slight issue, it would be the
heater that seems to be somewhat long to come warm. Defroster is OK.
It's certainly not worst than the Subaru Justy I had before but it won't
touch the tropical climate my old Ford Tempo (RIP) would produce!
Go with the Hatch, you'll like it!

One thing to consider is that the hatchback for '05 (in Canada, at least) is
a four seater. There are cup holders between the two back seats.
The sedan is a five seater (or maybe a 4 1/2 seater). Difference in the
trunk is considerable between the tow, as well, although Consumer's Reports
says the hatchback will "handle a folding wheelchair".
Had my sedan since July, an '05, and I love it. Mind you, it only has 1,500
kms on it so far!

It is considered a "simmilar model" or something like that,
so importing it is easy - but you will need to convert
the speedo to MPH and replace the lights and so on with DOT
compliant parts. Oh - and pay a nominal fee. |

There is the post I made last month on this, plus the reply.

The NHTSA regulates this. See them here:
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/
Your Echo hatch should come over with "minor labelling requirements", so
it's easy. Basically, you need the Certificate of Compliance (from Toyota)
for the specific VIN you wish to import, and the rest is doing the chicken
dance with Customs. Since they're all made in Japan, you will need to pay
something like 3% duty.
A dealer may be able to help with the paperwork and Certificate, for a fee.

I have a 2003 sedan, and it's just what I expected:
- completely reliable
- 48 mpg US in mixed driving
- handles well
- seats 5 comfortably
- big trunk for it's size
- under $13K USD out the door
Minor annoyances for me:
- there's no way to run the defogger without the AC
- the intermittent wipers aren't variable speed
However, I don't have a spoiler, spinning wheel covers, power door
locks, heated seats, power mirrors, windshield wipers on the
headlights, power windows, a sun or moon roof, power trunk closer, or
power vibrating seats. If these are must-have items, the Echo is not
for you. :-) |

Well, you can get some of them. I have the power windows, door locks and
mirrors plus cruise on mine.
I was disappointed that I couldn't get the Automatic Dog Polisher with
Fur-Lined Sink though :)
