Scions hard to find? |
|
|
We're buying a 2005 Scion XB when we move later this month. My husband
called a Toyota dealer in the city we'll be moving to and asked if they
could have one ready for us to pick up when we get there. He was told
that it could take six months for them to get one for us.
Wha'? Has anybody else run into this? We're not getting anything special
done to it -- we just want a plain ol' automatic Scion XB with nothing
added. Is there really a Scion shortage, or is this dealer full of it?

I don't have any experience trying to purchase a Scion but our local dealer
seems to have xB's in stock. I have not noticed as many xA and tC so the
dealer is probably selling all he can get of those models.
In the dealer's defense, it is not realistic to expect a dealer to hold
anything for you without you paying for it or at the very least putting a
sizeable deposit on it because it costs the dealer money to keep something
on the lot. A particular car on his lot may very well still be there at
the end of the month but if someone comes in tomorrow looking for it, he
would be a fool to pass on the sure sale tomorrow and hold the vehicle for
someone they have never met who called on the phone and asked him to forgo
making a profit until the end of the month. Also, the dealer does not make
as much money on a Scion as he will on a vehicle with a higher markup so
they are more likely to stock Scions with some options. Stripped-down
Scions will not stick around the dealer's lot very long.
If you are moving to a metro area, there will be several dealers within a
reasonable driving distance and one is likely to have the vehicle you want
in stock. Either buy it now or accept some additional options.

The Toyota dealer in Venice Florida has several on the lot.
Fly down...enjoy some wonderful weather....pick up your new car and
break it in on your way back...
Would be my advice...

Check inventory at www.buyatoyota.com
The Scion business model uses pooled inventory by region, I suppose it is
entirely possible that there may be a shortage of the Xb in one region.
Here is the Southeast there are currently 484 Xb's available. |

I would not call it a shortage, but scions are not in great supply, at least
not yet. I waited three weeks for mine, got it last saturday and love it.

Hmmm. Am I blind, or is there no option for Scions? We'd want do buy one |
near Seattle, preferably near the airport. A random SeaTac zip code is
98188. I don't see any Scions at all... |

Interesting. I've never bought a new car before, and didn't realize
waiting was sometimes involved. |

Interesting idea, but then we'd be driving cross-country with a
toddler... I don't think we want to break it in that much. |

For Scion, try www.scion.com to find a dealer. I did a quick check and
found 12 dealers near the 98188 zip.

Whether you are going to wait to purchase anything, whether it is a Cabbage
Patch Kid or a Scion, is determined by supply and demand. If demand is high
and a lot of people want to purchase something, then you will have to either
look around or wait to buy. On the other hand, if supply is greater than
demand, then there are a lot on the lot or in the store and the retailer
will have "sales" to help them move along faster.
I'll give you some insider dealer info if you promise to wipe it clean off
your hard drive and forget you ever read about it ;-) In the car
business, a primary measure of whether a dealer's inventory is too low or
too his is his "days supply."
If a dealer sells an average of 2 cars a day and he has 60 cars on his lot,
then he has a 30 day supply. If that same dealer has 90 cars on his lot,
then he has a 45 day supply. Manufacturers like dealers to have a 45 days
supply inventory so customers have plenty to choose from. Of course, if
cars sell faster than the manufacturer can make them then inventory might be
a 1 or 2 day supply. If sales are poor, then the dealer may have a 180 day
supply.
A lot of things affect days supply that are difficult to measure. A dealer
with a lousy, rude sales force will sell fewer cars a day so a 45 day supply
is a different number than a 45 day supply for a successful dealer.
Different colors and accessories sell at different rates. Yellow and purple
cars often have birthdays at dealerships, as will an Echo with a vinyl
carriage roof and running boards.
If a vehicle is custom-ordered, it may take 30 days for the order to make it
through the queue at the factory and then get transported to the dealer.
Good luck on your move!

There is no shortage of xBs. They're selling well, but dealers have them on
their lots around here in SoCal.
Now, if you wanted a tC, you might wait a bit... |

No, there is no shortage the only dealer option you need to specify
when ordering is the transmission. They told me the same thing about
8 weeks but I wanted the black xB. They got my my second choice from
a different dealer in Chicago in 1 week. All of the extras are done
after you purchase the vehicle.
I think its all in the color that you get. You've got to get one
though, they are outstanding, I just wish I could keep my 18" TRD
Wheels all on year round but they don't work so hot in Chicago snow.
