How to change ABS (2000 Toyota Sienna) |
|
|
The brake indicator on my 2000 Toyota Sienna (78K miles) is on
intermittently. I assume it is time to change the ABS system.
I used to change the non-ABS disks pads with a C-clamp squeezing
the brake oil into the brake reservoir to make the space for the
pads. Can I use the methods for the ABS?
Is there a WEB site for this? I checked google and didn't find any
thing about ABS change.
Thanks.

The ABS should never need changing, and I have never heard of a system being
changed. ABS stands for "anti-lock braking system, so saying "ABS system"
is saying "anti-lock braking system system." The ABS system is made up of
sensors which measure wheel rotation, a computer, and an actuator which
controls the application of the brakes when the ABS system is engaged.

The methods for changing pads for a vehicle with ABS do not differ from one
without ABS so a C-clamp or tool available at auto parts stores for that
purpose will work to retract the pistons on your Sienna. Besides changing
pads, you should apply anti-squeal compound to the back of the pads, make
sure the slides move freely, clean up the shims and clips, and check the
condition of the rotors.

If you are searching for "ABS Change", you will not find anything because |
nobody ever changes the ABS system. Try searching "front brake pad
replacement" instead.
Brake jobs are relatively easy, however, it is important to do it correctly
for obvious reasons.

Are you sure it's telling you the pads are worn? I thought it was to
tell you that you were low on fluid - perhaps you have a leak.

Yes but some people say you should crack the bleeder screws and force
the brake fluid out of the bleeders instead of back up into the brake
system. There is a chance the old fluid will carry dirt back up into
an ABS valve. Seems like a stretch to me but I guess anything is
possible.

You might want to invest $12.95 in one of the aftermarket repair books
for that vehicle just in case there is something unusual about the
brakes that you would want to know when you do this job.

Thanks for the information.
Sorry for confusing the ABS with the disks. I meant to change
disk pads in stead of ABS system.

yes ,take the brake reservoir cap off any compress the caliper. the light
comes on because the fluid is low or the parking brake is on. doesnt
necissarily mean it needs brakes. |
