Yup, buy the original CD's.
If you can afford the ugly car, you can afford the artists music.

Hey Fred, maybe you're being a bit over the top there. I have hundreds of |
original cd's, but no wish to carry them all in the car. It would be good if
I also could play mp3 format in my car (E46) as I do a lot of miles and
basically am too lazy to keep reloading the autochanger for every other
journey. mp3 format would allow me (and Thomas, and no doubt many others!)
to enjoy more of their music in a more convenient manner.
Did it occur to you that maybe Thomas already does own the original cd's?
Not everyone has the time or inclination to rip off the music industry (in
itself a rip-off!) by downloading music.

What, as in that I haven't the time, or that I can't be bothered?
Personally, I wouldn't risk the security of my computer, I don't think I
would feel secure leting my machine connect through god-knows how many other
servers to someone else's machine to download music at a slow rate anyway.
(I know thats how kazaa worked, friend tried to talk me into it once, saying
I was silly to be still buying cd's. Don't know about any other sites or how
they work.)
I buy most of my music through ebay, and I'm not interested in copies, only
originals.

Thomas, the stereos in German cars always tend to be a bit behind the
times. I suspect the makers sell to people who care more about
driving than paying for the latest stereo equipment.
IMO, one good way to add MP3 capability would be to get an Apple iPod
and attach one of the various types of iPod FM transmitters to it.
These devices can broadcast to any unused FM frequency that you would
tune the FM receiver of your BMW to. The MP3 would come in like FM
music.
There are also iPod connection kits for the BMW that may allow the
track titles to display and the stereo controls on the steering wheel
to work on the iPod. There's installation to consider though.
One drawback to the iPod approach is that you must remember to take
the iPod with you when you leave the car. Well, at least you won't
worry about messing up the dashboard.

Yeah, I'm of the same mentality. I also have a large and valuable CD
collection that I need to protect - not good to keep popping them in
and out of the changer in my car. MP3s offer the possibility of
touting around a high density copy. I'm actually doing CD-R copies at
the moment but MP3 would be a lot more practical.

Here's where we disagree.
My CDs are nearly all early music CDs and they are quite rare and low
volume. These artists don't make much money on them and the labels
don't either. Many labels lose money on these low volume works but
their artistic value cannot be underestimated.
Musicians need to make a living. It generally takes 15 to 20 years to
become really good as a professional musician and that's assuming you
have the right genes. The fact that some music is bought by the
millions is more a function of the willingness of the buyer than the
fact that such artists and labels make a ton of money from it. If you
object to their wealth you should just abstain from their music. It's
their private property and no one is forcing you to buy or own their
work. If you want to save money you can always buy used CDs - a few
of my CDs are used because the production runs are so short.

Michael, please dont take my comments the wrong way, I appreciate that it |
isn't the artists (in most cases, anyway) that are responsible for the
pricing of cd's. Neither do I have an issue with certain artists making
more than others, either due to talent or pure sales numbers. I accept your
comments re. low volume works, but that doesn't alter the fact that the
consumer is being ripped off by a lot of the major record labels by their
pricing strategies.
Consider for a moment someone the likes of Mr Robbie Williams, any album
that he produces WILL sell in vast numbers regardless of talent levels (and
yes, I do quite like most of his work to date) which in turn reduces the
unit cost per disc, or in most record label's cases increases the profit
margin per disc. If the profit level was pre-set and the end product price
then varied, I feel this would be a fairer situation for the consumer. That
is what I mean when I refer to the rip-off music industry, sorry if that
wasn't clear.

I think what you may mean is that a given CD should be priced
according to the value of each track with the good ones priced a
preset higher value than poorer tracks; thus altering the price of the
album depending on what tracks are on the CD. Theoretically possible
but the label would then have to rate its own product and it would get
very messy. How would an artist feel if the label pre-judges his or
her work and sets a price and margin even before the music has a
chance to receive popular rating? I think it's an intrinsic problem
of an album not having the degree of resolution of individual tracks
or songs.
Or do you mean the price of a given CD should drop as production costs
decreases? I think people just buy what they like. The labels have
to spread their profits around to support works that they deem
worthwhile but not necessarily popular. Popularity has no reliable
relationship to quality or value in the artistic sense. If the music
industry only sold profitable music the industry would have been
decimated long ago. The labels try to maintain a healthy music
industry by supporting less popular works that may one day be more
appreciated. Sometimes they do so even if the works never achieve a
desirable profit or indeed lose money. My CDs are often 2+ times the
cost of popular albums but I am sure the labels still lose money on
some of them regardless of how truly "valuable" and gifted the
performances were.
In any case, if you object to receiving unwanted tracks in an album
then downloading from a site like iTunes where you only buy the
tracks/songs you want should provide an answer.
At any rate, I should not belabour the point as it would be off-topic
on this board. Please feel free to e-mail me if I missed your point.
