My CDs are nearly all early music CDs and they are quite rare and low
volume.

There *are* many albums published in the early days of the cd that
are no longer available. For instance, in my collection I have
a couple of It's A Beautiful Day albums that are no longer in print.
If I dug, I could find others.
The fact of the matter is, some albums (usually cult favorites or
imports) are no longer available due to market forces, or legal
issues where the copyright and/or distribution rights in the US
are owned by companies or individuals that don't/can't do business
here. Going into the Virgin store in London or Tokyo can be
an eye-opener on this issue.
