Greetings,

My wife's car is an '03 Matrix base model. It has 56k miles on it
and I have changed the oil at the recommended intervals using Toyota
filters and Mobil 1 synthetic 5w/30. When I started up the car yesterday,
after sitting over night, it had a hard knock for a couple of revolutions.
It
did the same thing today. It sounds fine after initial start-up, and after
it
sits for a little while , just when the engine is cold. We have the
extended
warranty so I'll be taking it to the dealer for work.

Any ideas on the problem?

Any suggestions on the warranty?

Thanks in advance!
Roger

First off I would ask if your using the problem octane gas. Best to
use a quality gas like Chevron, Texaco or another top rated brand.

I had also heard that some oil filters can also cause a start up
knock. I experienced this myself. I now use "pure one" purolator oil
filter. I'm almost sure the Toyota factory filter is made by these
same people.

I think it was the fram or ac filter that was causing my start up
knocking. I about your Toyota factory filter would be causing the
problem.

In case its bad gasoline you can add some Lucas gas treatment to the
tank to clean the injectors and etc. I think it disburses water.
Just in case you had picked up some bad gas. I used the Lucas on my
cars with 30K or more miles. It says you can used it in new cars. I
would let the repair shop have a go at it first.

The octane in gas has no bearing on knocking noises at startup. Spending
money on higher octane gas than the owner's manual recommends is an absolute
waste of money.

You shold purchase gas from stations that do a high volume of sales because
there is less chance for water to consense in the storage tanks.

The Toyota factory filter is not made by Purolator.

I doubt if the Toyota filter is causing the startup knock because everyone
who uses Toyota filters would experience the condition.

Like I said above, bad gas won't cause knocking at startup unless it is so
bad that it fouled the injectors so badly that they leak so much fuel that
it washes down the cylinders. This is highly unlikely because that much
fuel leaking will cause lots of smoke on startup, and will probably set a
check engine light due to overly rich mixture.

Have a Toyota dealer service facility check out the car. If it only occurs
at startup, leave it overnight.

As has been mentioned by RayO, octane rating on a cold start up is not an
engine knock factor because ... the engine is cold so the conditions for
preignition or detonation do not exist.

This also a FALSE premise where the Matrix / Corolla is concerned BECAUSE
the oil filter is positioned with the threaded end UP. This prevents a dry
start-up even if the filter had no anti-drain provision.

The only two contributors to engine knocking for the first second or two
after the engine fires off are (a) revving the engine too high while (b) oil
pressure is building. While the oil filter cannot drain in the
Matrix/Corolla, the oil galleries after the oil filter can and do drain thru
the main bearings over night and it may take a second or two to fill and
pressurize.

are u using toyota oil filters. aftermarket may cause a knock cause they
dont have oil drainback valves like toyotas have. helps them get oil
pressure quicker
