Mr. 86,

LOL! Well, we know what 'Hachiroku' means!!!

You didn't know? I thought you were of Japanese descent or spoke Japanese.
At least you're not RokujuKyu!

Having a Japanese face and last name used to give me some credibility when I
met with customers who had issues with their cars in New England. The
service managers would tell them that I came all the way from Japan to meet
with them and the customers would be impressed with my accent-less English.
I didn't have the heart to tell them that I grew up in Chicago's Roger's
Park!

Never checked! But this is on the replacement engine, too! Unless *TWO*
Gumbys installed the thermostats upside down!!!

Like Bruce says, upside down t-stats are not that uncommon. It might be

worth investing in a gasket to take a look-see.

No, I knew what Hachiroku means. I have one slowly returning to the
elements in the back yard. Maybe if I stopped buying 'project cars' and
Supras I could actually get it put back together! I bought it with 10,000
on it in '86 (hey! An AE86 in '86!)

One of the absoulute all-around best cars I have ever owned, and I have
had a stable! Speed, agility, comfort, driving ease, everything. Wish
they'd dust off the plans and build me another!

So Solly, Char-rie! You have to get up early in morning to get past me. I
was married to an Asian for 8 years (and her family, too). I'd see though
the lack of accent in 2 seconds!

Who did you work for? I'm in the Amherst MA area.

Wanna try for three? Do I hear four? Four, going once... ;-)

Getting the thermostat installed upside down (if said gumby didn't
know there /is/ a right way and a wrong way) is right up there with
dropping toast - I.E. what are the odds it lands butter side down?

And the odds on the toast falling butter-side-down if the floor is
covered in very expensive wool carpet are...?

This is a junkyard replacement engine that you don't know the
history on? Take it apart and look. Unless you know the last person
working on the engine had a clue, it's probably installed upside down
or the wrong sta(n)t.

(If you think the last word in the previous sentence is a typo, it's
not. Think about it some more.) ;-)

--<< Bruce >>--

Oh, no. I used to sell auto parts!

I have a pretty good history of the engine. It was in a '91 truck. The
original owner did regular maintenance. The guy I bought it from said the
chain was changed even before I asked! He maybe wasn't quite so nice, but
he only put 20,000 or less on it before he found that trees don't move. I
have some of the maintenance records on it.

Wanna talk about records? The Supra I just got has the original BUILD
SHEET from Japan. I have NEVER seen one of these in any of the new Toys I
have owned! I also have the original BOS: $33,440! Maintenance records are
haphazard, though. The original owner was a lawyer in Toronto, and her
husband was a doctor...I don't think the car went too long without service.

The AE86 rollers were great cars. I had an employee lease for my wife and
she loved it until we started filling our bedrooms with kids. Went from a
coupe to a 5-speed LE Corolla Sedan to 3 or 4 Previas to a Sequoia.

Damn! What made you leave sunny California!?! I would give a lot to work
for Toy Motor or TRD in Long Beach!

Mansfield, eh? I have bought a boatload of Toys from Toy of Greenfield and
a couple from Gale in Enfield. Also have dealt with Brother's in Hartford
(they bailed my ass big time on a sleety, blustery night by giving the
parts to a salesman so my wife could pick them up!) and another in W.
Hartford. Also, *can't remember* in Salem NH where I bought my '80 TE71
(er, 72???). So I must have come under your 'jurisdiction' at some point
in time!

Also, I bought the 'hach' from the service manager at Gale. His wife
wanted a *second* horse, and they also had an '86 MR2, so he said either
the MR2 or the GTS had to go. She decided to give up the GTS, and it has
been in my 'stable' ever since. Guy's name was Mike.

Are you still in the loveley Northeast? It really is beautiful, even when
it snows (as long as it's GONE by the end of March!!!)

Oh, yeah, as far as the Port of Entry; 2 things.
1. I would want 1 of just about every Toyota I saw coming off the boats,
and
2. I would be hard pressed from stowing away on one and going to Japan!

I was promoted from the SF region to the Boston Region. My next move after
Boston would have been to the HQ in Torrance, just south of LA, with 2 hour
commutes so I thought I'd make my fortune as a commercial real estate
broker. The folks at TRD jhave pretty specialized backgrounds so the
"regular" car folks rarely transfer over.

I used to call on Toyota of Greenfield and the dealer in Salen NH is my old

boss who bailed the corporate world to become a dealer. I believe Bill
Cosby bought a Cressida at Toyota of Greenfield. The dealers in CT are in
the NY region so I'm not familiar with them.

No, back in the suburbs of my hometown Chicago. From left coast to right

coast to back in the middle.

My first job was printing Monroney Labels (a.k.a. window stickers) and

various shipping reports, tracking truck bed installations, and tracking
vehicle shipments to dealers. A ship would typically discharge about 1,000
cars at a time. They weren't very pretty when they came off the ship
because they were coated with a cosmoline-like waxy substance to protect the
paint. The cars went through a car wash that sprayed kerosene to wash the
stuff off before going to dealers.

Never thought about the stow away thing, I was a bachelor freshly moved to
CA from Chicago. All the mountains and oceans and wide open spaces was a
lot more appealing than Crowded Japan!

Yeah, I connected the knock sensor myself (check engine light was on, saw
a connector hanging). Also, temp guage operates exactly as it di dwith old
