It's offical folks, starting in 2006, Porsche will have a *FACTORY* car
competeing in LMP2 in the Rolex series. 'Twas confirmed last week by
the director of Porsche Racing. There's also a rumor, although it is
just a rumor, that factory-backed 997 GT3s will appear in the ALMS,
which will include a run at the 24 Hours, either in 2006 or 2007.
Pretty great stuff, I know that I'm not the only one who was
dissapointed when the project that gave us the Carrera GT supercar
failed to spawn a new GT1 as Porsche had originally planned.

In the Rolex Series, Porsche is at the top in GT class Manufacturers
points with the points spread between teams. They stand at 102 points,
versus 60 points for 2nd place BMW. I can't seem to remember anything
about the GTS standings.

What is the definition of GT vs. GTS? and why is Porsche in GT and not
GTS?

There is no GTS class for 2005 in the Rolex. In the past the larger
displacement cars such as Corvette and Viper were in GTS (the Porsche
Carrera GT would have probably competed here as well if it had been
raced). The Corvette C5 is eligible for GT this year, but the Viper is
not.....

At www.grand-am.com you can go blind reading the rules and regulations
for the existing classes.

<<The Corvette C5 is eligible for GT this year, but the Viper is

Pontiac and Chevrolet both have larger displacement cars running in GT
this year, with minimal success as far as the Manufacturer's points are
concerned. Pontiac has 46 points to Chevrolet's 31 and Porsche is still
on top of GT, now with 130 points. I still find it amusing when GM
advocates rant and rave about GM's renewed racing success with the C5
Corvette platform, as in most cases, barring accidents and other
non-team/non-driver fault issues, the Chevrolet's can't keep the
Porsche's off.

There is no GTS this year. In the past, the GTS class had cars with
larger displacement engines than those in GT.

looks like GT1 will be exciting, the 550, C6R, and the DB9!

I'm sorry to say it, but the modern Aston's do very little for me. All
three of their current models are gorgeous, but they look so similar to
one another, I have a difficult time telling them apart, and the DB9
actually outperforms the top-spec Vanquish based on most of the tests
I've seen. So much part-sharing is occuring with Jaguar and so little
is seemingly being done to make the Aston's truly world leaders that I
find myself utterly disinterested, and I'd opt out for a Ferrari or
Porsche any day if given the choice (of course a Porsche is almost
always my first choice anyway). Seeing as I'm not much for the
Corvette, and that Porsche aborted race-oriented development of the
Carrera GT, I'll be rooting for the 550s in GT1, even though I'll admit
to being a bit happy at the fact that their dominance in F1 seems to be
coming to an end this year.

Isn't Ferrari still using last year's car in F1?

Nope. They switched to this year's car Bahrain (two races early). They
are still sorting things out with it. In Imola though, it looked great.
This week, it looked like the Bridgstones failed for whatever reason.
Look for them to come on stronger within the next few races.

By this last race in Spain, McLaren looks to be the team to beat. We'll
see if their cars hold up. It would be nice to see Shuey, Kimi and
Alonzo battling it out for the championship.

DS - CBS F1 announcers suck.

You mean the Carrera GT isn't going to be raced? But it looks like all
the racing cars out there... I'm not really up on this but it looks
like the old 917-types...

I hope so! I think I'll have a stroke if Renault wins it.

Well, their car sure looks cool and they definitely have a leg up on
the competition so far this year. I like Alonzo, but Fizzle-chella
talks too damn much and DNFs - then talks more smack. Italian drivers.
Love 'em or hate 'em.
I really like MS and RB (does anyone have more class than these two?),
but I was getting tired of seeing red atop the podium. I'm okay with
Renault doing their thing if everyone else lets them, but they better
think about speeding things up.
I also like Kimi and would like to see him with a champeenchip under
his belt, too. It's just that the interviews with him are tough.
What can I say, I'm a fan of the sport and unless Porsche were to
suffer the slings and arrows of Formula 1, I hold allegiance to no team.
Especially Minardi! ;~P I loved their synchronized start in Spain.
Bring back Zolt!

No, unfortunately. The Carrera GT started out as a race car, intended
to be Porsche's GT1 entry (their last GT1 was in 1998, and it won
overall at LeMans). But the project was aborted for whatever reason and
they turned what they had, including a detuned version of the race
car's V10 engine, into the Carrera GT. There was also some rumor that
the engine is very near spec for Formula 1 (although it's obviously to
big, F1 mandates 3.0 litres) and that Porsche was considering re-entry
into that arena. This is much less likely, F1 is extremly expensive and
while they had some success in the area with the Porsche powered
Tag-McLaren cars during the mid-1980s, they had a fallout with the TAG
people and the Porsche-Footwork powered cars of the early 1990s never
made a splash.
