can a larger carb get me better gas mileage? |
|
|
I have a 67 skylark with a 340-2. I was told recently that switch to a
4 barrel carb would give me better gas mileage. This is my daily
driver so i don't need more power (though i wouldn't mind). Also I
have a small crack on my DS exhaust manifold. I can't find a
replacement and wondered if it would work to have it welded.

A quadrafjet or something similar may help. It has very small primaries but
large secondaries. Hopefully the primaries are smaller than your two barrel
and you can keep your foot off the pedal so you don't open up the
secondaries...

Yup, what he said. I'm partial to the Carter AFB/Edelbrock Performer
myself, but a Q-jet wouldn't be a bad choice either. Only gotcha will
be finding the intake manifold.

It may with the spread bore types the others are talking about!
Now you may get anywhere from no difference to 5% better.
Best case say 5% better so if you spend $30 a week 52 weeks a year
you will save $78 dollars a year tops.
Now a carb and intake may set you back $600 (new is the only way to go a
shitty used carb could make mileage much less!!!!!) or more so 8 years
or so to break even. Maybe 16 years at 2.5% increase or 38 years at 1%.
0% infinity!!!!!!!!
The 2V was designed for your motor. If you swap it for a rebuilt one or
put a kit in it this may be your best choice!!
The 4 barrel should be a present to YOU if in the unlikely event you get
a little better gas mileage count it as a bonus gift.
REMEMBER IT TAKES X AMOUNT OF ENERGY TO DO X AMOUNT OF WORK!!!!!!!!!!
So all you can hope to gain is some of any waste. too lean (small jets)
can and will increase any pinging or detonation problems you have now.
an optimum fuel to air ratio is needed (richer waste. lean burns quick
to quick amplifies ping / detonation problems)

Like they said about the carb, you have to weigh the plus and the minus.
Find a welder to braze that exhaust manifold if it isn't too bad of a
crack.

Here's something to help sway your choice,
!967 340- 2B 220 HP @ 4200 RPM
340- 4-B 260 HP @ 4200 RPM
While your at the boneyard picking up the 4-B manifold also pick up a LH
exhaust.
:•)
I am still thinking about the Quadjet carb suggestion. My 66 GTO had
really small primaries and huge secondaries. The rear barrels were the
size of tomato juice cans.
