Just depends on the car....

Hot Rods are a slightly different "game" then restored cars...

Just my opinion...

In many cases, they're not. A great many hot rods get built because it
isn't
an economically sound decision to restore them; you put more money into
them
that they're worth restored.

Heh. It costs enough to keep my old car running without restoring it or
turning it into a hot rod. How do I get Foose to steal my car and give
me a line of bullshit for a week again?

I wonder how many people in California get their cars stolen -- for real --
and figure they're going to get them back in a week all tricked out.

I don't like "Overhaulin"; the premise of the show bothers me. I don't like
seeing people thinking their cars have been stolen, and I really dislike the
way they play people along.

The practical side of me has a real problem with it, too. The reason most of
these cars haven't been fixed up is because the owners can't afford to do
it. So yes, Foose gives them a car that was worth $1,500 and is now worth
$85,000 -- but if they couldn't afford a $50 water pump before, how are they
going to pay for insurance on it? Where are they going to park it? And if
they were barely putting gas through a six-cylinder on their burger-flipping
salary, how are they going to run premium through a blown big-block?

I don't know about you, but I'd be more than willing to deal with those
issues. :) (more power, argh argh argh) I know that I will never be
overhauled, however, as there's no big-time vendors of blower kits,
suspension parts, etc. for Studebakers that would be willing to donate
parts for a TV plug and I probably would not be a pleasant person to be
around if I found that someone had taken it upon themselves to swap a
mouse motor in my coupe... Now I probably would accept a Caddy motor
swap, but then you run into the same problem...

I have to agree with you there.

Besides, the hosts are complete ijidts. The girl is there for eye candy, but
they try to play it like she knows cars. Umm... sure. My 17yr old daughter
knows more about cars than her.

Cars are supposed to be practical? Wow! I have one practical car. It's
square, it's plain. It's a great car but it's boring. It gets me there in
perfect
comfort, and I can bring five friends along for the ride. But it's still
boring.
It's like the kind of car my 74 year-old dad would drive. I still love this
car and wouldn't trade it for anything just because it's easy to park...

Part of the dream is to have something impractical that goes VROOOOM!
I have one of those too. It's loud. It's quick. The stereo alone took me six
months to figure out. Every time I pop the clutch, I get jetted back into my
seat only to reach for that gearshift, chirp the tires slightly, and get
planted
into my seatback again with the next gear. Double-clutching while standing
on the brake pedal and heel and toeing keeps me amused all afternoon, but
I wouldn't take my mother to church or anywhere in it. This is where I can
be a kid with my toy again. That's what these TV shows are selling. It's
a fantasy. To be a kid with a toy and have no cares in the world. I feel
that way when I'm driving my fast car. It's an escape from the monotonous
every-day so-called lives that many of us are forced to live. Who cares if
it gets six miles to the gallon, leaks in the rain, and only seats two small
people and a chihuahua? It's the fantasy that counts because it corners at
0.95 g's, does the quarter mile in eleven seconds flat, and makes a lot of
cool sounds!

The problem is that an original 36 Ford coupe probably won't
be worth as much as a "hot rod" 36 Ford roadster. Certain makes and
models are in more than enough abundance in original form that the loss of
one means just about nothing in terms of historical value or scarcity
of similar original cars.

Just watch Barris-Jackson auctions for a few times
and you'll see the "original" 1930s Fords and Chevys
going for significantly less $$$ than 30s Fords and Chevy
hot rods.

That's just the way it is.

Cheers,
Bill S.

In my original post, I guess what I was trying to put across was, Why
take a beautiful 36 coupe and cut the top off?
Now that car will _never_ be a 1936 Ford coupe _again_....Never
ever.........
It will be lost to the old car world forever.
It is now in the world of a " Beautiful 1936 award winning roadster
FAKE.
I went along, years ago, with cutting up cars to make " Kustoms" I
watched Barris mold 50's cars into lead sleds. I thought they were the
cats ass. But no longer..
Yikes time to get off the soap box.

You have a point Bill. I guess it was just
the fact that I watched them cut the top off. So we all have to decide
whats better,
a car restored to pristine condition or one thats rodded....I think that
if you own the car....you should do what ever you want to _your_
car..............as long as I don't see you cut the top off.

Yep, to each his own I say too.

One personal observation. Having attended many car shows I can say that
if I attend a show with more than a couple of original 32 Fords I'll
likly give scant attention to all but the best one or two...BUT, there
can be a multitude of 32 Ford hot rods and each will likly be
significantly different than the others and thus each tends
to get a closer look from me. But again...that's me...
I'm happy to enjoy all cars as long as God gives me the chance to.

Cheers,
Bill S.

I say "to each his own"...although I will admit, it was painful to watch. I
like my customs, but I like 'em mild....nice paint job and do whatever ya
want under the hood and a nice interior (as I get older, interior comfort
seems to get more and more important). But that's my personal
opinion...we're all entitled to ours. Although I'm sure mine is right ;-{)
