Re: V6 Pinging right between coasting and acceleration |
|
|
Wow this thread is still on a server?! Anyway I fixed the
pinging....and yes, it really was pinging, not drive-train noise.
I pulled the heads and replaced valve guides and all the gaskets. The
pinging I detailed in this thread is now completely gone, replaced by much
better highway accelleration. I'm guessing that oil being sucked past the
valve guides was fooling the O2 sensors into thinking the mixture was rich.
Also, the valves may have been clattering around a little in loose guides.

Re: 95 Audi 90 Quattro Oil smoke in exhaust. |

Pulling the heads and replacing valve guides (and all the gaskets) seems
to have cleared this all up.
A point of interest: All 6 cylinder walls still have visible original
factory cross-hatching. The engine has 180,000 miles on it! I expect I'll
be driving this for a long time to come....unless I decide to get a 30V A4
some day.

You might try a "leakdown test" - I believe that may tell you if the leak
is
through the rings (= "blow-by"). In an intake vacuum condition - throttle
body closed, engine winding away to slow the car, I would expect it to the
valve guides as well.
Cheers!
Steve Sears
1987 Audi 5kTQ - valve guides replaced with head gasket....one of those
"while you're at it" things.
1980 Audi 5k - goesn't burn oil so much as leak....darn cork-shrinking
synthetic oil.
1962 and '64 Auto Union DKW Junior deLuxes - burns 1 litre of oil every 40
litres of gas....even when it was new.

I think I've learned another detail about this. I saw the same puff
of
smoke at the same intersection this morning. I realized that this stop
sign
is at the bottom of a hill that I coast down in gear using the engine to
gently limit my decent. It would seem to me that, in this condition, I
may
be sucking oil past rings or valves into the combustion chamber without
buning it while I coast down the hill, then it burns under
accelleration.
It's been suggested to me that these engines don't tend to wear piston
rings
or cylinder walls much at all. So, I guess I'm looking at valve guides?

I have a 1995 Audi 90 Quattro with 165,000 miles.
This morning I noticed a small cloud of smoke that I left at an
intersection when I pulled out. When I got to work I opened the door
and
pressed on the gas and watched a faint (not opaque) cloud of oil (not
water)
smoke form behind the car. This was more than a little disturbing.
From what I know, this could be coming from a head gasket, piston
rings
or valves? How might I decide which is the
cause?
Of course, after coming home from work, I could not reproduce the
symptoms. Sticky piston ring?

I'm using the software in shareware mode with an adapter I built from a

I've diagnosed a few problems very nicely. I would not hesitate to buy the
software when I need it for more.

I would be curious to know the details of your buyback offer from Audi. My
2004 A8L, purchased new nine months ago, has been sitting at Bernardi
Audi, Natick, MA for the last three weeks with no end in sight. They
simply cannot figure out how to repair this vehicle. I really am nervous
about ever driving this car again as the last failure caused a near miss
head on collision. |

Intermittent behavior of wipers, suspension & MMI. The wipers sometimes
hesitate momentarily while operating, the suspension adjusts by itself in
my garage long after it has been parked & I once opened the passanger door
while car was parked unlocked with no key in my garage and the MMI system
turned itself on. No big deal at first and dealer informed me that the car
was behaving normally, computer diagnostics fine, etc at the 5K and 10K
service. On December 11th the wipers failed completely while driving in
the rain & I experienced a near miss head on with another car. The car has
been at the dealer ever since with no end in sight (3+ weeks now). They
have replaced the wiper motor and three different computer modules, but
the wipers still do not operate properly. Also, the auto trunk closure
does not work properly, the sunroof does not alway close in response to
the controls, the recently installed satellite radio occasionally mutes
itself and the MMI system sometimes reboots itself. |

If the dealer would use a bit of common sense rather than relying on the
computer for ALL they knowledge they might begin to suspect corroded or
intermittent grounds causing most of these problems.
At least thats where I would be looking.
