I just bought a 98 240SX SE off Ebay. A little buyer's remorse here -- not
as exciting as I expected, a tad noisy, and not much different than my 95
200SX SE-R. Eh...

Anyway, one problem that I can't forgive is a really sticky throttle. It
takes a SHOVE to get the throttle to move from rest, which results in too
much off-the-line acceleration. I noticed an unusually high amount of
resistance is built into the first inch or so of travel. Is it supposed to
be like this? How can I fix it?

Any 240SX enthusiasts in California's Orange County or bay area? Hoping to
meet fellow owners...

Thanks.

The throttle body needs to be cleaned.

Regarding your sticking throttle, as a previous poster mentioned...could
be due to a dirty throttle body, (a can of carburator cleaner should
remove the carbon buildup inside)OR it could be a misadjusted or
stuck/kinked throttle cable. Misadjusted throttle cable is easy to
repair...just loosen the retaining nuts at the throttle body plate,
adjust the cable to take up the slack, then retighten the retaining
nuts. The stuck/kinked throttle cable might require some lubricant,
(like WD40 or such), or a pair a pliers to straighten out the kink.

And as for a Local So Cal group or San Francisco group, a rehash of
something I posted a little over a month ago...

there are all kinds of user groups and good websites related to the
240SX.......

One of the oldest and possibly the best, (in my opinion that is), is the
Amarok.org mailing list.
http://www.amarok.org/modules.php?name=Sections&op=viewarticle&artid=1

It consists of several dozen list members from all over the US & Canada
who are extremely knowledge-able with the ins & outs of the 240's. These
guys, (and gals), have done it all & can offer quite a bit of
information when it comes to maintaining, repairing & modifying your
240. Check the following example:
http://importnut.net/300zxbrakeswap.htm

All it takes to join this free mailing list is to simply "subscribe" to
the 240-Chat list. Once you subscribe you can post all your questions to
your heart's content. Someone, (or several people) will respond with
your answer.

Another place to get good information is thru the Nissan Performance
Internet magazine:
http://nissanperformancemag.com/projects/project240sx.php
Listed below are a few of the articles posted:
http://nissanperformancemag.com/january03/240sx_brakes/
http://nissanperformancemag.com/june04/240sx/
http://nissanperformancemag.com/installs/240sr/

If you're interested in chatting with fellow 240SX owners, then there
are several sites which you can join:
http://www.240sx.org
http://www.zilvia.net
http://www.freshalloy.com

As for local chapter check the following...click on the LINKS button
once the page loads...these are just two examples...the links will
provide more:
http://www.SoCal240SX.org
http://www.az240sx.org/links.html

As for places in getting parts...there are so many. To name a few...
http://www.PDM-Racing.com - this place has almost everything you will
need for your 240. And to make this even more interesting, everything
that is sold on PDM's website has been tried & tested as the owner races
his 240!! http://www.pdm-racing.com/features/240sx.html.

Other places include:
http://www.jspec.com/
http://www.enjukuracing.com
http://www.nismoparts.com/
http://www.courtesyparts.com/

All the above mentioned are reputable shops with merchandise in stock or
readily available, offer excellent customer service and fast shipping.
Anyhow, apologies for the length of the post, but I hope the above
mentioned is able to get you started in the right direction.
Good luck with your modifications & enjoy your 240SX!!

Wow, that's a lot of 240SX organizations.

Most people seem to think my stiff pedal is a throttle body problem. One
mechanic said my car's too new (1998) for it to be the cables. But then why
is the pedal stiff even when the car's off?

BTW, I seem to be getting REALLY SHITTY gas mileage so far: I've driven 150
miles and I'm at less than half a tank. At SE-R.net, they theorize this
could only be due to a dirty throttle body or the need for a new oxygen
sensor. Somebody, educate me about this oxygen sensor stuff! I heard it's
expensive.

The O2 sensor is cheap and easy on the '91, not sure how much it might have
been overcomplicated for '98, but if its really out, you should get a check
engine light from the OBD-II computer.

They have fairly small gas tanks. Have you fill it up yet to get a real MPG
number. Our '91 (same engine, different body) averaged just under 25 MPG
over the last 20,000 miles. High of 34 and low of 18 (depending on usage of
course). You are supposed to use 91 octane in it.
