Hi,

I am looking at 97 540a with 128K miles. It seems to be in really good shape
and has been maintained well. I can't find anything wrong with the car. The
owner wants about 10K for it. Is this a good deal? Is there any compelling
reason to not buy a 540 with those kind of miles?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Well..... anything can go wrong soon w/ that car and criteria. These
cars have weak cooling system componenst like the radiator,
thermostat, and waterpump.

Who knows what that car has gone through........ could've overheated
at least once before, and might've had the heads worked on... you just
never know.

I'd stay away from it for sure.

Have a machanic you trust check it out. I now have 235K on my 93 525i and it
runs beautifully. I did have a gasket leak that almost overheated the
engine. There was some minor damage but the bmw mechanics "freshened" the
engine for $3500! Nevertheless, the engine is strong and in great shape.
Ask to see the maintenance records to see if the car has been well cared
for.

lastly, I wish I had a 540. They have a lot more power and are fun to drive.

The radiator and other parts of the cooling system on this car have been
replaced recently.

The suspension, the instrument cluster, camshaft sensor, engine gaskets, are

weak points as well.

I have the same car with 120k miles on it and it had the problems listed
later in this post and were repaired. Otherwise the car is in perfect
condition and I think it will run to 200k miles. I think that if there are
no other problems and a good service history you should do it. I love mine.

p.s. the cats may need replacement if they haven't been done, and that is
$2500.

The cats are $2500? That is utterly ridiculus.

Good idea. The E34 540iA are known to have two major problems which occur
at higher mileage:

1. The oil pump, which is inside the oil pan, comes loose and quits working
(Solution: Have a mechanic remove the oil pan and fix the pump)

2. The auto gearbox dies at 100k miles, because this is the life span
intended by the BMW engineers when they claimed the ATF fill of the gearbox
"maintenance free" and "life long" (Solution: Check the papers of the car
and search for a proof that the ATF of the gearbox has been changed
recently. If there is no proof, change the ATF immediately and repeat ATF
change every 80 k miles, even if this is not regarded necessary by BMW
service manuals).

Does anybody positively know, if BMW succeeded in fixing these problems
with the E39?

Yes, nearly as bad as your spelling. But not quite.
