I'm looking for a 2005 545, and I need to get the automatic or SMG (the wife
can't drive manual). The dealer doesn't have an SMG to test drive right now.
Is it worth it? Will it always be in the shop? Is it a pain to drive?
I've never owned a car with an automatic, so I'm expecting to wear out the
dead-pedal within 12000 miles :-)

If your wife needs auto then I wouldn;t consider the SMG as the auto modes
are nothing like an automatic gearbox and I don;t find it very pleasant to
drive at all. I'd go for an automatic with steptronic to at least retain
some feeling of control.

But you really should drive one yourself, go to another dealer or get them
to borrow a car from elsewhere.
