I have an 87 cressida that I really like. The only problem is that
when it's cold it revs very high before catching gear. (it's like I'm
revving the car in neutral). The reverse gear (I never realized how
important reverse is) is nonexistent when the car is cold. As it
warms up it "acquires" gears the warmer it gets and eventually runs
fine. I haven't taken it to a tranny place yet b/c I fear that the
fast answer will be that I need a complete rebuild even if I don't.
Trans fluid is at appropriate levels and smells and looks fine.

If I do need a rebuild could I pull a tranny off another 87 cressida?
Would labor costs make this a dumb move.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, those are symptoms of a transmission in need of overhaul. If you were
to go the route of a used trans apparently the Supra trans is the same.
Used auto trans are always a crap shoot, but it's prolly a a couple thousand
dollars to rebuild it.

Don't trust that the fluid is fine by the way it looks and smells. Go
to a place where they can change the whole tranny fluid; not just
drain and refill. You need to find someplace that can suck all of the
fluid out, which is about 10-12 quarts. If this doesn't work, try
using a fluid you can buy at a parts store that conditions your
transmission seals. They actually work to a small extent. If neither
of these work, then your transmission needs rebuilding.

You can probably find a used one from the junk yard for about $100.
Make sure they give you a warranty. I've purchased one for a 91
Cressida before and they gave me a warranty of 90 days. I did the
installation myself. A year later I was told that it was still fine.
As long as the first one you got was good, it should be good for a
while. Ask around shops where you're at on how much labor would be.
Make sure they replace all of the fluid too.

Actually, that's the worst thing to do if it's already slipping when
cold. The crap in the transmission fluid is all that's holding the
remainder of the clutchplates together. Once changed, it'll slip even
when warm.

$100. Wow. That'd be amazing.

$1300 will get you a completely rebuilt transmission at Cottman or
AAmco. If the rest of his cressida is in good shape, it's well worth
it.
