Previa distributor cap and rotor replacement |
|
|
Okay, I'll bite. I'm guessing I need to yank the passenger seat out and
there's a hidden access panel lurking there that will reveal the secret of
the cap and rotor replacement. If so, what do I need to do to jerk it out
of my '97 Previa?
As an aside, what's the best manual for a '97 Previa? I'm more partial to
Haynes than Chilton but their web site made it look like they only cover up
to '95 models. Suggestions anyone?
Thanks in advance. Have a great weekend!

And the Haynes also does not cover the supercharged engine which was in most
of the '95 models such as I have.

I seem to recall seeing the distributor and have never taken out the front
passenger seat and I don't recall seeing it when checking or adding oil
under the driver's seat so it is probably visible from underneath.

The distributor cap can be accessed from under the van, facing the rear.
Most work on the van is not bad if you have access to a lift.
For changing the spark plugs or the valve cover gasket, you'll need to use the access panel under the front passenger seat. Take off the carpet trim at the door edge, the passenger seat, pull back the carpet, and then the access panel. You might want to do everything once you're in there (plugs, plug wires, valve cover gasket & distributor O-ring if needed).

Get them both, and the FSM. Each has different views which help. Not much money compared to what incorrect repairs cost. It is useful to have the S/C information from Chiltons.

I used to think I was clueless. Now I'm convinced I'm just dumb. I've
scoured the thing from underneath and can't find it. It was at night and
I was using a flashlight so I'll claim that as an excuse. No, I'm just
dumb. Can you give me a hint as to where to look while I wait for my
manual to arrive?

Excellent advice; thanks for the tip. I'll pick up a set of goods before
I pop the seat off.

Sound advice since I have a S/C model, thanks for the tip.
Will do. Thanks again for all the help, Martin! |

Look behind the exhaust manifold, where it meets the exhaust pipe.

Slide under the van around where the sliding door is (assuming LH driver ;-) ) and look up. It's *much* easier to work on this van if you have access to a lift. |

You're welcome.
The bad news about the Previa is that some engine access is a hassle,
requiring the removal of seats, using lifts, etc. but the good news is that
it is a pretty bulletproof vehicle. We got rid of our 93 RWD LE with 99K
miles last year, doing only routine maintenance, a starter, and radiator.

you dont need to remove anything to do a cap and button. but to do the
wires you need to remove the seat and it pretty straight forward from
there |
