525E or in the US ... 528E ... what do the manuals drive like.

All 525E's sold in the UK had autoboxes, i don't think the
325e in either manual or auto was ever sold in the UK.

What sort of speeds were attainable in each gear .. bearing
in mind the redline starts at 4500rpm.

Does having 140lb/ft from 550rpm mean its a nice smooth
drive around town.

I've got a standard 525e auto ... although i've fitted a 2 litre
differential on the back ... meaning it has quite a "launch"
compared to most revvy overweight modern cars.
..... I'm thinking of converting it to a low geared manual over the
christmas holidays.
(Now wheres that spigot bearing??)

I drove one around for about two months. It was really not bad at all
around town, I quite liked it. It felt torquey enough. Lively even, but
civilized at the same time. It was no dragster to be certain, but quite an
enjoyable daily driver.

While I have no experience with the 525i, I drove both a 528i, 530i,
and now a 545i with manual transmission. I never encountered a
problem with either car and BMW is known for one of the better manual
transmission. Go for it.
