Hi there

Just recently bought a 2001 A6 , 2.5v6 TDI

Have been advised that it will need a cam belt done around the 79,000 mile
mark

The local Audi dealership say the job will cost me £400 as there are 2 other
belts that need to be changed as well as the cam belt

Does anybody know where I can get this done cheaper around the midlands as
the Audi price tag seems a little steep for a rubber belt job ???. I would
like it done by a reputable garage as I want a receipt in case the new belt
snaps then i have some come back

thanks

£400 seems reasonable if they are replacing belts & tensioners etc - there
is also a lot of labour involved - they have to take half the front of the
car apart to get in there....

Even more reasonable if they are replacing the water pump - which they may as
well do once they've carved their way down to that cam belt...

They do it a lot in the States where they seem to see quite a few failures.
Its not such a big issue in Europe & generally isn't done. The point of
doing it is that its a good preventative measure & can be accessed while
they are doing the TB work. If it fails its a case of taking half the front
of the car apart again to get to it. If you get it done its worth replacing
the Thermostat as well. Replacing the water pump also means you get your
coolant replaced which should be done every couple of years anyway.

Much of the labor for doing the water pump is the same as for doing the cam
belt and is many times the cost of the water pump itself. Now your water
pump may be fine at 79,000 miles but it is HIGHLY unlikely that it will last
until the next time you do the cam belt at 160,000 miles. More likely it
will fail by 100,000 miles at which time you'll wind up paying for all that
labor again. BTW, you might as well change the thermostat too.

I got the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, idler roller,

thermostat,accessory belt,coolant change on an A4 2.8 whcih means
dismantling the front of the car. Took the independent 4 hours in total.
Cost was £365ukp inc VAT and they used all Audi parts which cost £250 alone.
