On a motorway at legal speeds it should be more like 36 ish.

Mine only dropped to under 20 in heavy London rush hour use.

Huh!!!

36 MPG!

Give me some of what you are smoking. :-)

Maybe you didn't read the question closely, and thought he said kpg?

I have two of these 525i's and get, when I drive sanely, at most 29 mpg on the
highway. I get 21 mpg or so in the city, but that vary a lot depending on
traffic and my driving style.

Could be the oxygen sensor or catalytic converter. Do you smell gas under the
hood? Could be injector problems. Is the car running smoothly?

16-18 is very low, if you are talking about normal highway driving.

As Dave says.
I have a '94 525SE auto with a/c.
I average about 25 overall. Mixed urban and short trips etc.
On a m/way I get around 35.
Mike.

The OP posted from the UK.
Maybe you're thinking US mpg.
1.201 US gallons = 1 UK gallon

Absolutely not - UK MPG. Bigger gallons.

The gearing may be different too - it has the ZF 5 speed auto with an
interstellar 5th gear - something like 38 MPH/1000 rpm. I don't know if
this box was fitted to the US models.

Because of the higher gearing and TC lockup, it was quoted as more
economical at speed than the manual. The down side was the acceleration or
hill climbing in top at say 70 was near non existent. It would have to
drop a couple of gears to start feeling lively. But mine was an early non
Vanos one.

I, too, have an E34 (93). My combined city/highway consistently averages
22-23 mpg. All city driving would be a lot lower.
