Pete,
You might also check with the Audi Club of North America - their publication
will have North American connections for mods. Whomever you deal with, be
sure of the company's rep before plunking down the cash.
Yep, Amphicars are pretty cool - although their uniqueness makes them pretty
darn expensive - and they have some nooks and crannies which tend to hide
rust. There were 3 at a show I was at last summer - 2 were owned by a guy
who restores and sells them (apparently he's well known in the Amphicar
circle).
His 2 and a Trabbi:
http://www.microcar.org/micronorth/2004/2004-Pages/Image25.html
We went on a cruise to the local (waterfront) park - he was constantly
taking people for rides - flying down the boat ramp for "splashdown". He
had a bilge pump set up with a remote - he'd zap sunbathers as they walked
by from the snack shack.
For getting together with a bunch of other Audi nuts - and to see what is
available for your car and to see what others have done, there is an event
coming up in Carlysle, PA at the Import Nationals (May 20-22):
http://www.carsatcarlisle.com/schedule/import/index.asp
http://www.audiclubna.org/chapters/midatlantic
I'm planning the road trip with a bunch of ur-Quattros from the Toronto
area. I'll just have to leave well in advance....like maybe today......;-)

Hi Steve,
Wow back at you for your DKWs! Super cool. I love all that old stuff.
It
was a much simpler time for sure. This might sound a little dumb to some
people, but I always wanted an Amphicar. You know, the cars that do time
as
boats. You just drive them down the boat ramp and into the water. Fun
fun.
I think they're also of German origin.

I'll check out those sites and see what I come up with. I'm also going to
call the guys at TAP in Florida. They seem pretty hooked up on Audis, but
I
don't know if they have chips and such for an '04 yet. Thanks for the
info.

Pete,
Wow, I guess the resume should have been posted with the first post,
huh?
Chances are, you'll have fewer folks here posting stuff about modding a
new
Audi. Aside from the spam trolls posting about porn, cheap prescription
drugs and requests for assistance laundering large sums of money from
Nigeria, the Audi content posts on alt.autos.audi are mostly about
either,
"My car won't (start/run/etc.)" and other maintenance and
troubleshooting
issues experienced with primarily earlier series Audis. Or, of course,
there's the "I'm mad as hell and not gonna take it anymore" folks who
have
a
problem with the servicing of their new car and either want to rant,
think
that they're destroying the market for Audis by posting here (they're
not),
or asking advice - many of these folk disappear after either the car has
been fixed, or they've gotten rid of it. If you want some lots of real
current-model mod posting - look to places like Audiworld.com or
Motorgeek.com (but expect lots of signal to noise ratio). Whatever
direction you go with your car be aware that Audi may raise their
eyebrows
at slight mods and if something breaks they may turn their back on you.
But
then again, you're posting on the net (accessable by everyone) about
beating
on your car at the track - so I guess you care not about the
consequences
of
modding. That must be nice....
Not to say that all the people posting and reading here are drivers of
antiques....at least one here owns an RS6 (eh, Peter?). Keep us in the
loop
of your experiences with the car - some here will undoubtedly be
following
the same path in the future.
Cheers!

P.S. - I saw a new S4 Avant at the grocery store a few weeks ago - the
growling exhaust note as it peeled away was mind-blowing....of course,
the
fact I was waiting for a tow truck to help me recover my 5ktq from the
parking lot after the starter failed in -20C weather made it that much
more
bittersweet........please don't mind me while I "hate" you.....;-)

It is refreshing to hear that the suggestion to improve yourself before
improving the car. It is incredible to see how many people think that
just
because they have the cash to buy and drive a great car, that makes
them
a
great driver. As a lead instructor for Skip Barber for nine years and
a
road racer for 14, I see it all the time. They seem to believe the
adage
"Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?" That's fine until
they
get past the limit of the car (and didn't recognize it early enough),
run
out of talent, and the other adage comes into play: "Crashes cost
money.
How hard do you want to hit?"

I'm just thought I'd come to a place were there's a lot of experience
with
maintaining and modifying Audis and have some fun talking about it.
