Hi group,
As I have just bought a 1996 UK model A6 1.8 T, I wondered
if anyone could supply me with any details of this model.
It looks really nice, 60,000 miles, 2 owners, beautiful
condition. Just trying to find out HP rating, mph, and
mpg. Many thanks, and sorry for the boring post.

Thought the 1.8T only came out in 97 ? If it is one it has 150 BHP, I used
to get about 30mpg from mine, 99 T and ran it to 120000 miles in four years
with few problems. I now have a 98 S Avant and get a similar mileage

Correct - the 1.8T only came in with the C5 model, towards the end of
1997. Up until then, the 1.8 A6 was non-turbo with 125bhp. Of course,
the 1.8T was available in the A4 in 1996. The 1.8T of that era was
150bhp.

Thanks for the response. The Parkers website was why I got
confused in the first place actually, as I could not find
a reference to a 1.8 T, as there were no model numbers
that seemed to correspond to that exactly. It's looking
like I bought a turbo, which is why I really think I
should do my research a bit better, as I had no idea of
that. Still, I am quite pleased, as I was a bit concerned
a 1.8 engine would struggle in that size body shell.

Thanks for the response. The car may well be a 97, I just
assumed it was the older of the two years it could have
been with a P plate. 30 mpg sounds fair enough for that
power rating, and as someone who did not previously fancy
an Audi, I'm well on the way to being a bit of a fan, it
looks fantastic. I'm just getting rid of a 190E Mercedes
with 190,000 so if the Audi can approach those sort of
miles I shall be pleased!

Also, it's definitely an A6, as I'm not keen on the shape
of the A4.
Thanks guys.

When you get the registration document, it'll tell you when exactly
the car was first registered. If it's not too personal a question,
how much did you pay for it? I recently bought a 1996 Audi A6 V6 2.6
for 1750 quid.

Looking at the ad the car picture shows a P reg plate but the ad says 1998.
This is quite possible if you have a "personalised plate" so you may well
have a 1998 A6 1.8T, the 1.8T was first available only with 97 R reg. Note
for this car there was a recent recall regarding early wear on the front
suspension arms (had them changed on both my A6s) I note from the dealer
notes you might also be in East Kent ? If you are looking for an
independent Audi/VW specialist I have used M & S Auto Services in Biddenden
www.m.s.autoservices.co.uk as they are much less expensive than my local
dealer.

Yep, that's definitely an A6 (C4 model), so could well be a 1996/early
1997 car. However, to the best of my knowledge, this model was never
sold in the UK with the 1.8 turbo engine. This would explain why you
can't find the model you /thought/ you'd bought in the Parkers guide! I
can't quite make out the badge on the photo of the rear of your car, but
I think it just says 1.8, without a 'T'.

Can you find the engine code (on a sticker in the front of the original
service booklet), or somewhere in the boot (on the floor or in the spare
wheel well). That will allow us to confirm exactly what engine was
originally fitted. Of course, it may well be that someone has swapped
the engine at some stage.

Can you find a turbo in the engine bay? The turbo engine is most easily
identified by the more complex induction pipework - both the inlet and
exhaust pipework has to go through the turbo.

Hmm. I should have perhaps checked the ad a little more
thoroughly. The dates don't match, do they. On the receipt
for the deposit I've left on the car, which I've just
noticed, the date of first registration is 6/2/97.
OK, looks like it isn't a turbo. A bit of me is
disappointed, but if it in fact it's a 125 hp 1.8, that's
probably better for lower bills over the big mileage I
expect to notch up over the next few years.

Well, it was up for £3000, I'm no good at haggling, and
I've examined every receipt from when it was brand new. It
has 60,000 on the clock, backed up by all MOTs, and it has
a nice load of extras, that seem to add a lot of value to
the car for me. I love the colour and the condition. I've
also got the garage to agree to fix the couple of minor
faults I found, or I don't buy it.

You're right. The T is written on the original ad, and not
on the car, and so I assume I have the base model.
However, I like so much about this car, I'm not bothered I
may have paid over the top.

It looks like no need now. I never saw a turbo under the
bonnet, but then I wasn't looking!

Many, many thanks for your help everyone, I'm very
grateful.

I have bookmarked the website of the dealer in Biddenham
that someone recommended, as I live in Ashford, so it's
not too far away.

www.rac.co.uk says that it's a "A6 1.8 SE AUTO"
www.privilege.co.uk says that it's a "AUDI A6 1.8 (95-97) 4DR SE AUTO"

Neither mention a turbo. Personally, I'd check under the bonnet - it's
often emblazoned somewhere.
